New Believers Group

Often we have so many questions about what it means to be a "Christian". Or maybe we have heard so many ideas about who God is that we have no idea what to really believe.
Well I am really excited that tonight, Cyndi and I have the chance to have a small group in our home just for those people that are new to Jesus. Or new to the idea of really following God.

BASIC is a video teaching series featuring Pastor Francis Chan that we will be using as a jumping off point. Each 8-10 minute video will help to get our hearts and minds thinking. My hope is that as we go through this series, we'll all have a greater understanding of the basic foundational concepts and teachings of who God is, what does it mean to follow Jesus, and how to really let the Holy Spirit guide our live.

It's exciting to know others are hungry for the truth, and they have intentionally set time aside to grow in wisdom and understanding. The time of the video series is BASIC, I believe that there is noting basic or simple that will come of this time together. Rather I hope and prayer that the amazing happens each week in our lives.

Lazy Day

Took Sarah to the doctors today. Found out that too much dancing, running, jumping can be hard on a growing kids feet. Now she is a in sexy looking wrap for two or three weeks. The doctors medicine... "Take it easy, not any dancing for a week or so"

Yeah, right that will happen.

Other than that.... I simply rested my day away, after a great Sunday. It really felt good all the way around this weekend, but man was I a lazy man today.

Yet another

Praise to God for yet another person seeking, asking and find her freedom in the truth of Jesus Christ today. Not only another new committed follower, but another chance to disciple a newer follower of Christ in listening, sharing and helping another cross over the faith line.

Now May 8th we'll have at least 3 people getting baptized!

God is on the move and great and mighty days. Oh for the days of acts Chapter 2 when, "God added to their numbers daily those that were being saved".
It's not daily yet... but it is growing to be a more and more regular thing.

Please Holy Spirit don't stop now! We want more and more to know Jesus as Lord and Savior. More For Freedom in Christ!

My tax day

I used to be one of those early tax guys. Everything was nice and in order and ready to go after the first of the year. Not anymore. It's not really that my taxes require that much work, it's just that my days fill up more unexpectedly. That's one part about being a pastor, I never know what my day will really be like, the adventure person within me likes that. But then it takes away from the nice and orderly system I used to have in my life, like tax prep.

Honestly, I also just don't care as much about getting them done. It's not really a bad attitude as much as it's, I just know it will get done, because it has to get done each year. So why rush it.

I am thankful to have a great tax accountant that has served me and my family very well for many years. I do not know what I will do when calls her home.

Today is the day, I have it all ready, the time is carved out and then we'll get to see if we get any money back to reinvest in our family, life and ministry.

At least I got in done before the real due date!

Deeper into addiction

This morning I went deeper into the world o addiction.
In fact over the course of the last five days I have gone deeper and deeper into the addictive world... and man is it great!

Now let share why this is so great.

Earlier this year our leadership team agreed with my feelings that God wanted us to press in even deeper into the recovery and addiction ministry area. Over half of the people that attend Journey each month are opening struggling with some form of addiction.
Over the years we have seen God do some amazing things in these peoples live.
They are often the modern day, "lame, sick, blind" that Jesus touched and reached so well. Our passion to see God work powerfully had lead us to want to see the most broken of people fully healed and restored.

So decided to be even more intentional about reaching, loving and serving these people whom God cares deeply about. The week after we shared this at our annual vision night, we saw a new wave of addictive, hurting and searching people come in our doors....and that wave has no stopped since.

Sunday I was in a different mens recovery / re-entry house and this morning I was invited to visit the Gables Recovery House (For women). Each place wanted to hear about our outreach / coffee house called Uturn, and the Gables has asked me to come semi-regular (rotating basis) on Fridays and talk, listen, help give spiritual advice to these ladies in recovery.

It is amazing how we heard God leading us more this way, how we intentionally responded and now how he has added, and added to this already. We did not go seeking these new connections, they came to us.

Add to all this, on Thursday of this past week a women in recovery meet with me and another lady and she gave her life to Jesus! God has clearly called us to step out and reach these people in recovery. We are reaching them on their terms, in their comfort zone, at church, at recovery meetings and one-on-one settings.

To reach the lost, hurting and broken... we must intentionally be looking for ways to meet up with them and hear their stories. I can see that we are doing that better and better each day, and God is taking us deeper and deeper into this unique area of ministry.

God confirmed how much of an impact we are already having in this new wave of people.
One young lady was proudly wearing the Uturn T-shirt that she bought this Sunday at Journey. The staff at the Gables stated, "They had no idea that you were coming today".

To save a life, you must go to wear people are dying.

I look for and expect God to continue to do even more amazing things as we go deeper into addiction.

Recovery Ministry

It is amazing to see how God is growing Journey's recovery ministries both formerly and informally. There are lots of newcomers attending Journey on Sundays and many are trying to break free from some addiction, or really unhealthy behavior. These that are coming in are truly hungry, thirsty and dying to hear about the love of God through Jesus.

But another amazing thing that is happening is that many of these same recovery people are already ministering and serving others. I am not talking small stuff here, rather deep Holy Spirit, power of God stuff! Last night at group, yet another individual stopped and spoke words of life, encouragement and insight that brought tears of joy and freedom to another. The words were not of their own prior knowledge or insights, but the Holy Spirits! Each week I see men and women, in recovery praying together of their own free will. Not pastor or group led.... just one-on-one natural pray time because of love for one another and God's Spirit speaking in hearts way beyond any teaching or words that I may share.

There is something truly special happening at our Freedom For Life and Women Sober Support groups. I pray we simply stay out of the way and continue to follow the Spirit's leading. What is happening is not scripted or planned, but it is fun to be a part of!

Today is Aprils fools day... April first and we are finally having our GRAND OPENING for Uturn Coffeehouse & Event Center. NO joke we really are. I think it's very fitting that we do so today.

This month marks the 7 year anniversary of Journey Church (the ministry that birthed Uturn)

It was a year ago that we moved from the Chateau Theaters into the former Quality Woods Building (no Uturn) as renovations were under way.

It also marks my wedding anniversary this month to my awesome wife Cyndi!

So why not go public with another crazy dream in the month of April.

No one really thought that Journey would ever really survive.
Many did not understand the bold move from the Chateau Theaters to a building under construction. And even fewer believed that a small church with very little funds, and no bank loan could ever really launch a outreach center, let along coffeehouse.

Thank goodness I serve and believe in a BIG GOD... as do others that have walked this foolish dream out these last years. So today we invite you to come celebrate our foolishness in following our great God. We can't wait to see what God will continue to do with the growing number of men, women and churches that will partner together to reach our city for God....one cup of coffee and event at a time.

This week has been marked by death. Monday night I was at St. Mary’s Hospital to love and support a family as their father [step-dad] took his final breaths and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus. What a honor to be there to share in the tears of hope and sadness. Then that same night I got word that a young man, whom I had ministered to over the past two year had died. Jason had a long battle with drugs and it finally cost him his life. Jason was a guy that desperately wanted to make up for lost time with God, friends and family. But he still struggled. Then the Chateau Theater closed up operations this week. The entertainment, movie industry has been hard these last several years. Hearing that the lights had gone out at the Chateau was sad, because as a church we have very fond memories of the place and it’s people. In the five years that Journey was there we held weddings on site, showed “Veggie-tale” movies, partnered with the theater with “Cruise for kids”, “Family fun night” and more.

Our relationship with the theater had been a really, really good one for the most part. Being known as the “Church at the movies” helped us reach our city for Christ. Now like these mens lives, that chapter of our life as a church is really dead and gone. All we have our memories of a greater place and good people.
Your family will miss you Don.
I will miss you Jason.
Our church and our city will miss you Chateau.

Super Sundays

Some days are more special then others. Most Sunday, I really am excited to get to Journey, reconnect with the larger church family and share what God has laid on my heart. Sunday’s are normally great days. Then there are some Sundays that seem to have an extra bit of power in them. We have been blessed to have several of them lately. This Sunday was a prime example.
From the moment I came it the Uturn coffeehouse, there was a sense of extra anticipation for what was in store for us today. As volunteers came to serve, it only added the feeling. Then both Sunday morning gatherings seemed very Spirit led and filled. Our large gathering with God was an extra special encounter. Part of the added bonus was the testimony and baptism of Sara. It never gets old, hearing and seeing how people are effected by a transformed life. That is a committed follower of Jesus making public statement of faith, total surrender through the act of baptism. When the crowd screams and celebrates another person added to the family of God...it’s overwhelming.
Then then are day rolled into opening up the Uturn coffeehouse and Event Center for the NFC championship game. We had a very excited and interactive crowd. Yeah it doesn’t hurt that the Packers won. That’s a extra bonus as well.

Honestly though you never know how long a wave will last of spiritual growth, newcomers, and clear transformation in peoples lives. Sometimes “it” just happens and you simply get to enjoy what God’s spirit is doing. I wish I could figure out the “it-factor” of days and weeks like this... but I can’t. That is where I must simply follow God, play my part and wake up each day wonder what God will do. I believe “expectation” does have something to do with “it-factor” of great days. So as I start this Monday, I expect something exciting, challenging or unforeseen to happen. I expect God to move in my life some how. I pray that I see, and enjoy it as much as i have enjoyed these last few weeks.

Planning Porn Sunday

Cyndi and I had dinner with Bob and Bunny Yanish tonight. We have hammered out the details for how we will have ages 3 years through 5th grade off site at CiCi's Pizza on Sunday, Feb. 6th. The kids will have some crafts, special activities and breakfast pizza, great cinamonn rolls and more. It's going to make our Porn Sunday extra special for everyone and allow both teens and adults to really hear, focus and hopefully allow God's Spirit to work.

Big yeah God for Bob and Bunny and their common vision for God.

Life Changes.... parents

You never really believe that you will ever reach that point where your parents health begins to fail and they really, really need you. Cyndi and I are both having to adjust to that hard reality. Last week Cyndi's mother was admitted to the hospital for some serious stuff. Now almost a week later it is clear her mothers life will not be the same. The family must begin to make plans and adjustments. My parents have loved living in the mountains of Colorado. Yet they both must mow sleep with the aid of Oxygen. That is not a good long term solution to two people that love to travel and be on the go.
So now they must sell the mountain home and move to lower lands.

It's a strange place to be our hearts and minds. We all know that we are fragile and human, yet the actual reality and walking through these adjustments is emotionally and spiritually draining. You never know when the phone may ring and things have gotten worse, or a parent may pass away.

Thank goodness all of our parents deeply love and follow Jesus Christ.
That is hope and joy each day. We have a confidence that our parents will meet their Savior and enjoy new life in a new way with Him. So yes it is strange to be where we are at, but it is also exciting to know where they are going.

We live as people of two worlds with mixed emotions.

Porn Sunday

Today I really began preparing for dangerous message on Sunday, Feb. 6th.... PORN SUNDAY.
Yup, we are going to address another one of those "elephants" in our lives and churches.
This is an event / message I have wanted to do for some time. But I also wanted the proper venue for follow-up. The Uturn coffeehouse and event center really allows us to hit hard topics such as this and do really good follow up.

XXXChurch has put together really solid material to help local churches such as Journey be well informed and practical. We will be putting a lot of promotional support behind this dangerous Sunday. My prayer is to really help people find freedom from this ugly, addictive and distructive material.

Pray that many, many will be saved from our human efforts, empowered and guided by the Holy Spirit.

Surprises

The scriptures teach us that God goes before us, that He is preparing away for us. Often when troubled times hit it’s hard to see, believe or understand that. This last Tuesday (Jan. 11th) following our Freedom For Life recovery ministry two men in attendance asked if they could pray for me. The man that I barely knew said, “I came into the building tonight, and God impressed on me that I was to pray for you. God is telling me you have sometimes ahead, an attack is coming and we should pray for you.”
So Nate and Jose laid hands on me and prayed. What was unique about this was, Jose prayed in a spiritual language I could not understand (tongues it is called in the Bible), while Nate simply prayed in english. After several minutes I thanked the men, gave them each hugs and that was it. (By the I’ll take all the pray I can get!)

Thursday afternoon I received a phone call from my brother-in-law. Cyndi’s mother was back in the hospital with “congestive heart failure and kidney failure.” Wow... pretty serious stuff. Later that afternoon, Cyndi and called her brother back, got more details and began adjusting our plans for the weekend. Plans that were going to be exciting, fun, family times. Now we had to tell our kids about grandma, have Cyndi pack and leave for Iowa this morning (Friday, Jan. 14th).

I shared with Cyndi the story of how Nate and Jose had prayed for me on Tuesday, With tears in both of our eyes we knew that God used these two me to help emotionally and spiritually prepare us for this phone call and the unknown future for Cyndi’s mother.
There was a peace that only God can provide that came over Cyndi and I as we finalized our new weekend plans.

Once again, we can see that God is 100% true to his word. We may not like or enjoy what situations we face in life, but God is there with us. God is actually going before us, clearing away for us to make it through the highs and lows of live. “I will never leave you or forsake you”, Jesus said.

Thank you God for going before us always.

Goodbye 2010

There are few times in my life when I can honestly say, “ am glad that year is over.” 2010 is one of those years. Even as I say that, it really surprises me. 2010 was an exciting, dangerous and an amazing year in the life of our church and ministry. We experienced a lot changes, and God’s working in so many ways. It was a tough year of ministry, but that is not why I am happy to see the year pass.

Honestly was my home life that was the bigger struggle area. Oh yeah, we had major changes there as well, but some were changes that actually brought more conflict and pain into my life and that of the entire family. There were some off the chart great moments, like having our oldest daughter complete high school. (man do I feel old )
At times it really felt like our family could not take much more of the battle and drama.

But as we start 2011, it seems as if we have collectively all begun to come out the funk and darkness. I am not saying all is well at the Bontrager household, only that it feels really good to be where we are at. Before Cyndi and I stepped into full-time ministry and church planting we were told that this would take a lot out of us, “guard your family and marriage”, we were told time and time again. We tried, but man life, the enemy and our own sinful nature continues to mess things up daily. I am eternally grateful for the family I have, the experiences that we have shared.... it’s even sweeter to say that at the start of 2011.

White Balanced

As a broadcaster I learned that when you use a video camera it’s best to first point your camera to a white piece of paper. This technique has been used for years and years. They use the white paper as true standard by which to set the lens. The technique is called “WHITE BALANCE” The camera is focused on a white, pure image... before trying to adjust and focus on people, clothes, and the moving action.. like a football game. Without first setting the camera to a “White Balance” the images will be off-color, blurring, not a crisp and clear as they could be.

The scriptures remind us to “fix our eyes on Jesus”, He is our white balance.
The things he said, the way he lived, and the sacrifice that he made for each one of us. When I focus on Jesus Christ, the Bible.... the many timeless truths found in the Holy Scriptures... I get “WHITE BALANCED”. This has got to become a daily practice in my life or I don’t stand a chance against the influnces of this world or our enemy Satan.

The Apostle challenges us to be “white balance” as Jesus Followers.
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

That’s a tough one to hear, especially when other places we are told to be, “In the world but not of this world.” God does not call us to retreat, from the world... yet he also does not want to be conformed to it either.

People we have to admit that the things of this world can have a strong influence and pull our lives. If we admit that, then we are able to attack the various areas in our lives that arer being compromised by buying into this world and it’s low standards. How do we do that?

We must once again return to the true standard of God. We must be daily “white balanced” by reading the scriptures, listening and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our steps. Once we remember the true standard, then we will be able to interpret everything else in light of the true standard instead of interpreting everything else according to everything else.

Are you tired of slowly being poisoned by this world? Are you wanting to remove the toxic influences in your life? Test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22)

NFL 2010 season.... so strange!

Today is the 3rd time in the 3 weeks that the NFL has had to move the Minnesota Vikings scheduled game. Dome roof caving in, game in Detroit, outdoor game at U of M and now blizzard moves the game with Philly to Tuesday.

Really... this is really strange. Especially today. Many games have been played in really bad snow weather. Is the NFL getting soft?

Plus the Packer vs Giants game is really the more important and exciting game to watch. It should have been the one moved to Sunday Night.

One more strange thing. Farve has hung in for the season. 20 years actively playing in the NFL. The non-stop game starting streak ended this year, and he still wants keep playing and playing. This morning on NFL.com, Farves former QB coach and best friends directly tells Farve to "Hang it up".

Yeah it's a strange, strange year.

One year ago

Amazing how time passes by. One year ago, God was leading me and the other leaders of Journey on an amazing and fast paced adventure in regards to opening up our dream outreach / coffeehouse. Man what a race it was with God. Here we are a year later and so many great things have happened for God's glory and honor, yet we are not totally where we had hoped to be either.

Adventures with God are rarely in a straight line or easy. However, they are very fulfilling and worth it. Being in the Uturn building now is simply humbling, the potential is still far, far from being fully seen or tapped into. Yet, there is so much to celebrate already. As we reflect on a year gone by with the Uturn project, we enter into 2011 knowing that we are planning to plant our second daughter church. So the adventure does not stop. We will advance and continue to improve Uturn while helping Josh and his family prepare for a fall 2011 launch of New Life Church.

What will we be saying this time next year?

Peace on Earth?

Each Christmas season we re-read the scriptures and hear how the angels broke through the night skies and declared... “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
 “Glory to God in highest heaven,  and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” (Luke 2:10,14)

So our Savior has arrived and now we get “Peace on Earth”.
What great news. No more war, famine, unruly children, no financial crisis.
If that was what the angels were announcing 2,000 years ago.... am I the only one confused and not seeing this “Peace on Earth”?

Plus what really makes things extra confusing is when Jesus says....  “Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other! (Luke 12:51)

What?
Jesus.... the Prince of Peace did not come to bring the earth peace like the angels said?
What... Jesus came to divide people? Where is the love, joy and peace of Christmas that I’ve always heard of?

Could it be that we have heard the angels saying something that they did not say.
Yes, I fully believe that they declared “Peace on Earth”,. but the did not declare that everything would be fixed, made right or even restored. They simple said “Peace on Earth” had arrived. What actually arrived was God, in human form, as a child. Jesus had arrived. Jesus is the peace we seek. But it’s not what we thing.

I think Jesus explained the gift of peace best when he said.... “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:27)

Peace on Earth comes when we know the “Prince of Peace” personally. As you get to really know Jesus, he brings clarity, order, peace of mind to your crazy life. The world may still be spinning out of control, but by knowing Jesus... you stop spinning out of control. With Jesus in your life you can lay your head on the pillow and sleep, in-spite the car payment being late, the kids not having good grades, or your job being on the line.

With all the great Christmas songs at this time of year, maybe it’s a secular song by the classic group Boston that nails what the angels were trying to say best.

What if we were honest?

This week we continued exploring “What if...” at Journey.
Week one we looked into “What if we Cared?”, this week we built on that and went deeper into “What if we were honest”

Yeah.... Honesty.
Like Billy Joel wrote and sang....
“Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.”

Amazing how we want people to be honest with us, yet we so often find it hard to be honest with others. I believe we as Christians especially long for honesty, yet it’s really hard to live out. In fact, real honesty within Christian circles is extremely hard to live out. It’s always been that way. Why because once we have Christ in our lives, once we have let God move back into our lives, somehow we have been told, or it’s implied... “PUT ON A HAPPY FACE”. After all God saved you and you’re free so everything has to be better.

In Jesus time... the religious leaders were the best at keeping up their image, appearances and happy face. This is also the group that Jesus spoke out against the most passionately. Jesus exposed the religious leaders, the Pharisees, Sadducees and Priest HYPROCISY. We often give the religious leaders a bad rap in Jesus day. After all Jesus publicly calls many of them, not all of them as HYPOCRITES. Do you know where the term HYPOCRITE came from? A Hypocrite as actor. The actor would hide behind a mask and play their role out. The goal... was to have the audience see and believe that the man and the mask were one and the same. A great hypocrite could change masks and have the audience believe he was now someone else.

Sad to say, but many of us are Modern Day PHARISEE HYPOCRITES. I wonder how many of us well intentioned Christians, juggle several masks at the same-time? Hyprocisy is an attempt to escape the pain, embarrassment and discomfort that comes with the sin in our lives.

Hypocrisy is all about IMAGE.
When we try and keep up appearances, our image, it gets to be exhausting. Image vs Honesty is a real big battle for many of us. It is especially hard for religious people. As religious people we have been shown and told, put on a smile, let others see how good you are.... but don’t you dare take the mask off.

One of the strongest emotions in our lives is fear. Fear blocks honesty.... actually fear is the arch-enemy of honesty.

What if we were honest means that our image can not be more important that building and having real, authentic, relationships. Instead of fear blocking us, we need to become more transparent with those closest to us. To be really honest, we must get honest with God, ourselves and then others. Because the real issue is not the many masks we wear, but the condition of our heart.

Jeremiah the OT Prophet understood this issues as he wrote. Jeremiah 17:9-10 
9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
10 But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives.
I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”

Until get real, honest and expose our ugly sinful hearts, we can’t be really honest with anyone. Not even ourselves. How important is honesty to you? How important is integrity to you? Don’t wait for someone to be honesty with you, start first with being honest with God and yourself.  It’s amazing how dangerous and yet freeing honesty can be.

This weekend we started a new message series at Journey called “What if?...” It’s a discussion series based on dreams and idea, on what our churches and lives may be like if we were more like the first century church.

Week number one focused on “What if we really cared for one another?”

Have you ever heard of a book called “REFRIGERATOR RIGHTS”
It’s a title of a book that came out a couple of years ago. The writer describes people who have this amazing thing in common called, “Refrigerator Rights” I have enjoyed these rights with several people over the course of my life. It’s an amazing thing to give “refrigerator rights” to someone or receive them. What I am talking about is when you can walk into another persons home, open up the frig and make yourself at home. Make anything, eat or drink anything you want. No hesitation. “What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine.”

It’s an amazing and freeing thing to enjoy with friends that are like family.
 The church was originally designed to enjoy “REFRIGERATOR RIGHT” as away of showing and being a real caring community / family.

 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper),and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47)

Do you see the “REFRIGERATOR RIGHTS” of the early Church? These people shared everything they had at it was based out of their homes.
And did it with great joy and generosity.
They couldn’t help but live this ways.
Refrigerator Rights was not the rare thing in the early church, it was the norm. It was the standard by which Jesus followers demonstrated how much they really cared for one another.

This type of caring is not forced, manufactured, manipulated. This type of caring family, laughs.... I mean really laughs and has fun. This type of caring family, gets real with one another.
This family both celebrates and experiences life's pains together. Note this type of caring community of family is contagious.
It was powerful, it electric and attracted more and more people.
They added to their numbers daily.
But more than that. They weren’t just adding “friends” like we do on Facebook or Twitter. They added daily to those that were being saved.
More and more people came to trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior partially because of how amazing this caring community of people were.

Ask yourself, “What if I really cared like this? How different would your life, your family, your friends life be?
If you are a follower of Jesus.... how more alive and amazing would your church be. What would it be like to extend refrigerator rights to those in your church or small group. Might we experience some of what the early church experienced? Might we see people come to faith daily.

Ask yourself.... What if I really cared? 

Saturated in Grace

Often we wonder if God can still love me, want me or forgive me. We believe that at some point we have gone beyond his grace. That feeling is really a lie. A lie generated by our own feelings and thoughts, or by our enemy Satan.

The truth is that God’s Grace can never be revoked, once given by God it covers us forever. The trouble is that we don’t let that grace saturate our lives and really have the desired effect. Think about a steak. Some people simply like their steak cooked up and served, Others love to marinate their meat. Those that marinate their steaks often let it stay drenched in their special recipe for hours or maybe even a day or two.
The idea is that the longer the meat is marinated, the deeper the marinade penetrates flavoring and tenderizing the meat. Once marinated, covered in the special recipe, the two can never be separated. The only question is how long and saturated will the meat become?

So it is with God’s grace. This process of being saturated and marinated by God never ends, it is a life-long process. Once covered in the “blood of the lamb” (Jesus Christ), you can never be uncovered. The only question is, how saturated or flavored by God’s special recipe of peace, patience, love, joy, kindness, forgiveness, do you want to be?
How “flavored by God is your life?

NO-Confidence in Leadership

Last night I watch the 49er’s take on the Eagles on Sunday Night Football.
Over all not a bad game. In the end Philly beat San Fran 27-24.
What was interesting was what happened late late in the game between the 49ers head coach (Mile Singletary) and their starting QB Alex Smith.
Smith was having one of those up and down nights, but at several critical times he fumbled, and threw interceptions or simple couldn’t get the job done.

The fans were getting restless, having not gotten a win all season.
The coach was getting more and more frustrated.
And the team itself appeared to be loosing confidence in thier QB.

During a commercial break the cameras caught Smith and Singletary “talking things out” . It was clear the QB’s night was done. Confidence in their leader was lost.
But then amazingly, Smith went back in to the game, helped lead the team to two more TD’s and made some great plays. (pass, run, scramble). Confidence in the leader was not only back but riding high. Plus it all happened in just a few plays.

The niners sill lost the game, but it reminded me of how fragile and crazy this thing called leadership is and can be. One minute you’re the “man”, the next (or so it seems) you’re loosing the confidence of your team (other leaders, friends, family, etc.) You may even be benched or on he verge of “going down”.

Moments like these are tough. For moments like this there is no real simple way to fix and repair the confidence of others in your leadership abilities. It could be any combination of things, over a period of time that brings you and your team to call a “time out” and have one of those talks on the side lines. From my own personal experiences in leadership, these talks are never fun, but they are highly valuable and needed at times.

What does it take to loose confidence in a leaders? What does it take to regain or repair that confidence?
How do you navigate it when some “believe in the leader” and others don’t?
When is it best to let things “Play out a little longer”, while staying committed to the rest of the team and hoping and praying the leader gets back in the groove?

I don’t have the answers. I just hope and pray that when these drops in confidence of a leader come (and they will), that there is plenty of love, grace and forgiveness.

On Mission

Last night we held our second Monday Night Football party at Uturn. Over all the evening was a “success”. More people came then the week before and new relationship continued starting to form. But last evening was a night that confirmed our mission is beginning to take root and to have a bigger impact in our city.

Yesterday afternoon tragedy stuck the Rochester Skate Park and a local family as a 19 year old committed suicide at the park. He shot himself. How sad that one so young choose to end his life. Yet that tragedy is the very thing that gave another local pastor the chance the use Uturn for something greater. Pastor Dave of Harvest church got the call regarding the suicide, he then spent several hours talking with his son and other young men that were having to deal with news, and lose of a friend. The “friends” were not all friends of each other, but they had the common friendship with the young man that killed himself. Dave heard their cries and their desire to be together. The problem was, where is there a safe place for all of them to meet? Dave invited them all to Uturn and Monday NIght Football. Mid-way through the first quarter they began to arrive. In all at least 12 young men came, talked, shared, cried, ate CiCi’s Pizza, watched football, shot pool and found a new safe place to hang and connect.

At such a tragic moment it was exciting to serve those in need at Uturn. It was exciting to see God use another Pastor and Harvest Church to use Uturn for a larger than life moment.

This was not about one church, or one ministry. It wasn’t even about one person. It was about the Kingdom of God, churches serving together because our city, it’s youth were hurting and in need. Praise God for how He is taking this dream and already using it to connect churches, serve our city and provide hope for the hurting.

We are on mission, the target is clear, the tools are being put into place each week and getting used more and more. I pray that many more catch the vision and that we see God move in powerful ways each time we open these doors to the city! I invite you to join the adventure.

NFL season begins tonight

Tonight the Vikes play the Saints to kick off the NFL regular season. All my life the Packers have been #1 and the Vikes #2 in my heart. Sad to say he two teams will not be neck and neck as they were last season. I want to make two predictions today.

#1 - Packers will win it all this year. Regular season could be a even a 12-4 year. (For sure 11-5) Rogers has a great team on both sides of the ball and they are young but maturing fast.

#2 - Farve will step out by the end of game #1 (yes tonight) or game #2.
Farve was begged to come back and his heart is there there anymore. Reality has caught up with him. His mind and arm can play, his body can't do a full season. Plus he really us the "old man" of the team and can't relate to all the kids on the field. He's a man from another time.

I have loved Farve play for so many years. The gunslinger has a hear of 12 yr old, but the body of a 40 yr old. Sad to say, but I think even he know really, really knows he is hanging on for all the wrong reasons.

So there you have it. My Kick-off thoughts for another season. Now play ball and let's see some long passes and hard hits already.

New series and prep

I am knee deep in reading, studying and preparing for our next message series. Actually, I started this process on this series months ago, but am now really fleshing it out in greater detail. "EXIT- journey to freedom" is a series of talks exploring the life of Moses and the Exodus of God's people from Slavery to the Promised Land.
There are so many practical and timely life lesson in this Old Testiment book, plus there are so many great promises of God and foreshadow moments about the coming Messiah (Jesus).

At times message prep and planning are boring and hard to stay focused on. This is not one of those times. This is flowing and flowing and that gives me hope that God is preparing me and Journey Church for an amazing fall. I am pumped, because I see a lot of my own life struggles in Moses and many God-appointed as well.

So prepare yourselves for a great adventure with God. Prepare to have a fresh expreience with the God that sets the captives free.

More than back to school

Today marked the end of summer, at least summer time activities.
It’s a very exciting and strange day for me.

Today Cyndi and i only had two kids heading out the door for school.
Abbi completed High School last May and today she did not have to walk unto Mayo High School. As strange as is for me to experience this, I wonder how strange it is for Abbi to experience this. Sarah and Hannah are now in 7th grade. I so many ways they are already taking care of themselves and Cyndi and I simply take care of the “big stuff” and help navigate life with them.

It’s an exciting and strange day at the Bontrager’s.

At the same time, I am so happy that summer is over. It has been a very strange summer for our church family. So many distractions it seems. It felt like a summer of disconnect at one level, and yet there were many new connections made of over the summer months.

I am ready to see what a “normal” rhythm of life is like for our leadership team and church family. I am excited to see where God leads us next. The Uturn is getting more active all the time and we have a church planter in the mix fir 2011. That’s a lot of exciting stuff.

So on a personal level..... back to school is stranger than normal this fall.
On ministry level.... back to school is hopefully a time of growth and stability.

Peter-Pan Faith

Peter Pan Faith

There is a growing problem in our world today, a moment in time that is becoming harder and harder for young people to face. It’s the transition from being a young person and becoming a young adult. If you have seen the movie “Toy Story 3” you have a good picture of what I am talking about. Young Andy is about to go off to college and he is struggling with what to do with his box of toys. Does he throw them all away, does he store them in the attic, does he take them to college with him. Andy is caught. It’s a very tough and scary moment when we begin letting go of our childish ways.

But the problem is not the tension of this moment, it’s actually the moment when young adults return home, unpack their stuff and retreat from adulthood. It’s called the “BOOMERANG” effect. Young people try the adult world and decide, “it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be.” So revert back to what they know and that is childish behavior.

The same tension and problem exist for many of us in the Christian faith. The same moment in time exist and it’s not easy. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. 17 I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:16-17)

So being “like a child” is actually ok, in fact according to Jesus having a childlike faith is vital.

But in Hebrews (and other places) we are challenged to grow up. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. (Heb. 5:12-14)

You see it appears that we can’t stay like children forever, we are taught to grow up, mature in our faith and play a larger role in the mission of God.

The trouble is we have many “Boomerang” believers or “Peter-Pan” type Christians who want to stay young forever. That may sound cute or fun, but it’s a very serious matter. You see the struggle is to protect some of the great child-like qualities (awe, wonder, trust, honesty, passion, even imagination or dreams) without being “childish”. Is it possible that too many of us are pretending to be mature believers, when in fact are childish believers. What are we afraid of? Is it possible to be a “Mature Jesus follower” and still have “Child-like faith”?

I believe so, and I believe it can be liberating and freeing thing.
 

GET-ER DONE

Today I am overwhelmed by God’s provision, let me explain.
Over the last several weeks Journey has experienced a dry spell in giving and focused energy to complete Uturn (Coffee-shop / Outreach Center). I understand that it’s natural for projects to have both high and low points, but knowing it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
God has been providing for us in amazing ways all through this project. It has grown and challenged us all in so many ways. Just at the right moment( often the last minute) God has provided the funds, volunteers and supplies to move forward with this God-size dream.

And now during this lull, God has done it again!

Journey has received a $5,000 gift to help complete the various things that must be done to help get Uturn open to the public. But that’s not all.
The donor would love to give even more, but they would like to see who else really believes in this city-wide dream and ministry.

So a challenge has been given to us.
If Journey (friends, family, co-workers, other donors) can generate at least another $5,000, then this donor will add another $5,000 to their gift making it a total of $10,000! Combined we can raise at least $15,000.

God is so good. Just when we needed a big boost, He provided one and then some.

So we invite you to rise to the challenge. Personally give toward Uturn.
Spread the word to friends, family, anyone that may have a heart for this city-wide ministry. Remember it’s not about Journey it’s about the city and God’s greater kingdom.

Inspection

In the next 24 to 48 hrs we hope to have our "final" inspection done so that we can move Journey in for Sunday the April 18th. It's strange that we have done all this work, we have followed all the requirements, had countless volunteers and professionals work so hard and yet.... we still must wait on another to approve us.

Our fate for this weekend ultimately lays in the hands of a man.
A employee of the city and county.

Placing your trust in another can be really tough.... especially after pouring so much of yourself out in the process. Yet, placing your trust in another can be big step of faith and growth. As we wait on this inspector to actually come through the building, we are praying and praying for all things to pass and go well. This inspection process has actually helped us cry out to God even more and build our faith.

So I encourage you to join us as we pray for this important inspector and our human efforts.

Good Friday

"And the sky was as black as night"

This afternoon we had one heck of a rain storm roll through Rochester.
It git really dark, the winds picked up and the rain came pounding down for a while.
I was intense.

Over 2,000 years ago it was a black as night at 3 p.m.
Just as Jesus stated, "IT IS FINISHED" Not only did the sky change... everything changed. Our freedom from sin, death and eternal separation from God changed. All because of one perfect man dying a brutal death on a cross.

I wonder how dark it really was.
How dark did it get before there was really a fresh new light?

It's always darkest before the dawn.", the old saying goes.
Remember Good Friday and how dark it got, and prepare yourself for a new amazing dawn called Resurrection Sunday or Easter.

Walls go up at Uturn

Monday March 30th a team of dry wall hangers came in and hung sheet rock at the Uturn. This guys really rocked (no pun intended). With the walls framed in, you can now see how the building will be taking shape. What a transformation step.

Next taping, mudding, sanding and then painting on Saturday.
By the way, this part of the project is another exciting gift from professional that do this sort of work daily. What a gift! A BIG YEAH God for what they have done, given, and will finish off.

With the walls going up, we move to our next step in getting the Uturn ready for Journey to move into.... Bathrooms must be set up. Green Zone

Last night I went and saw the new Matt Damion film, "Green Zone".

First of all don't waste your time on it. It's falsely marketed and a very anti-American film. Now I don't normally get to hung up on people "sharing their view points" in film making. Everyone has a story to tell, and we all see life through a different lens at times. But this was not just another lens, it as a clear anti-American, specifically anti- President George Bush film

Before you jump on the idea, I'm so Republican I can't take some hard "truth".... that's not it. Each president, each political party has it's own pros and cons. Ever administration has made giant mistakes, buried lots of skeletons in the closets, and each one has made some great choices for our country. So I can handle seeing where Bush or any President messed up. After all... we are all sinners.

No this film went extra lengths to paint our country and it's leaders as stupid, irresponsible, puppet masters for our own gain and then actually working a secret deal with Saddam's right hand man. Plus it painted the picture that army, CIA, presidents advisers were not on the same page, cover ups and hidden agendas were everywhere and the big one.... American lives and honor didn't matter.

If I where in the military today serving our country I would take offense for such a picture being painted. Especially as the conflict is not over and our troops are still there.

I'm all for a good "blow um up movie"
I'm all for a film that is a "what if" this or that may have happened."
I'm all for even "exposing the truth" in a film.

But at least make it a good film, at least be honest in how you promote it.
GREEN ZONE could have been a good film.... rather it's a big miss fire.

Damion and his buddies should have simply done the next Bourne movie.

Empty Tanks

I have a confession to make today.

EVEN MY GAS TANK GETS EMPTY.

Yup, even I can get so dry, toasted, used up that I really feel the depth and weight of ministry. It is not easy for me to get this empty. But this last Sunday night and most of Monday I was as about as empty as I have been in almost.... forever (no the last six years).

This emptiness has happened for several reasons:
First - the intense nature of daily minister is one thing, add a building project onto that and man you're bound to feel it more.

Second - four days at an Assessment Center... very intense and deeply spiritual and spiritual warfare atmosphere. Well worth it all...but man it takes a lot out of you. That's why I had Andy speak this week.... thanks buddy.

Third - Family. With three teenage girls, one about to graduate... man the home life calendar gets so full. I am blessed to have a great life partner / wife (Cyndi) help navigate all of that.

Fourth - The last few months I have had to deal with some personal loses, and in recent days.... some very personal attacks. In life you know this will happen, in ministry the enemy uses these events and turns them into spiritual warfare things.
Really intense at times and deeply personal.

I share all of this and reflect on who I am. I am driven by God, and my passion to use every day as best that I can for Him. I will not (even after all of this) stop going at Warp Factor 6. But I will try and stay alert more. I will try and guard myself in certain areas and ways. Plus, I will continue to learn how to use others better and better as a team.

Gas is expensive these days. Refueling an empty tank gets costly. It hits the wallet big time. The same is true for my (our) emotionally, physical and spiritual tanks.
It takes more and more to get it refueled. It's very costly and some have fallen off because they can't really recover from their break downs after running to long on an Empty Tank.

Guard your tank.
I'm a not saying STOP and sit.
Rather watch the gauges of life, don't push it the "E" line. Find time to regularly get fresh ed and refueled.

Converge Assesment March 2010

So after a crazy day traveling I have arrived in Orlando,FL for a four day Assesment Center Experience. This is true an amazing process and one that has dramatically helped both our church planters and spouses be even more "sucessful" in fulfilling God's call on their lives.

As I arrive here, I clearly remember our assesment experience almost 8 years ago. (man how time flies) But as I arrive here I am also processing two fellow church planters and their churches that are either closing or looking new pastors. Both of these churches started close to same time that Journey Church in Rochester did. Both of the churches jumped to life way faster than ours did. Both had great men of faith, supported spouses and dedicated people to their specific mission. Yet their time in those particular settings has come to an end.

That's one thing about church planting... you have to be really comfortable risking. Because you never know what God has in mind for each planter or church family.

So tonight I am excited and humbled to gathering together with other pastors and leaders to watch, listen, study and see what God's Holy Spirit may say about each of the eight canidates that have stepped out in faith to be here.

8 years ago Cyndi and I really had no idea how this was all going to work out.
Today we still have no idea how it's all going to work out.
And is both still very exciting and very scary!

As my friends close down their church plants... I am confident that God used them and their churches in mighty ways. "For everything there is a season" the scriptures say.
Tuesday, may begin a whole new season for 8 couples.... even as my friends begin to see what new season they are moving into.

I may be in sunny Florida, in Orlando but it's not fun and sun that has called me here. It's God and his ever expanding Kingdom.
So please join with me a pray for this entire process.
Let's see what God may do next with some willing hearts and risk takers.

Not just another day

This morning we cut a check for just under $5,000... not something I (we) do everyday. We cut the cut the check knowing that it almost wipes out our building fund. But we do this in faith, not reckless behavior. God has provided just what we needed, as we need each step of this process. Not any less or any more.

We are living on faith... not a bank account.

This morning I received an e-mail with an attachment. KNLW 98.8 FM has decided to create and run a radio ad for FREE that promotes our upcoming fundraiser at CiCi's pizza. (Tuesday, March 9 from 5-8 p.m.) Amazing!!! The event has been planned for awhile and we have been promoting it as best as we can. Our goal was to raise funds and spread the word on this city-wide mission. Now, God works through KNLW radio and increases our promotion output just as we almost break the bank.

It's not just another day... it's another faith builder day.

Tonight is Vision Night for Journey. A night to share some of the details of where we are going in 2010 (and beyond) as a church family. A day of challenge, call to commitment, personal investment, and budget growth as our country slowly climbs out of a bad recession. A night of faith building.

It's not just another day.... it's day where I hope people really catch the dream, can see God leading and desire nothing more to join with God on a wild mission.

It's only 8:25 a.m.
What more can happen today, that did not happen yesterday?

Days of Nehemiah

God rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem rebuilt in 52 days... the tools used were... Vision, passion, sacrifice, prayer, a and people of faith.

It's been an amazing start to 2010!
Personally I am in awe of how God has cleared the way, and provided for us an amazing place to reach our city for his glory. It has been but a God-size miracle to receive financial gifts, donations and volunteer time from so many people. As I write this more pounding and hammering us going on here at the U-turn.
Demo and Renovation are an amazing process.

Yet there is so much more that needs to be done.
We are just now about to enter into the most costly part of the built-old process.
At this moment we do not have the funds to pay for all that needs, must be done.
Yet.... we press forward in faith that God will provide.
God provides by using men and women to give sacrificially, generously and ridiculously. I know that money does not grow on trees, but it does hide in wallets.

Read the book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament. See how his heart hurt so badly for his city. How a vision was born. How a call to give, serve, invest at a crazy level was put forward. Read how skeptics came forward to shoot down the vision. And read how God did the impossible in 52 days!

I am thrilled, humbled and amazed to be with a group of people, a church family, that is reliving the days of Nehemiah. If you ever wanted to be apart of a God-size movement. If you've ever wanted to see God-do the impossible.... I invite you to join the adventure. Give like crazy, give so that others may come to know Christ.
Give so that in a short span of time a building can be renovated, and become a nee light to the city. May God be glorified.

Church planter potential

Today was exciting and special. It was another chance to sit and talk with a possible church planter for the SE Region. The SE region of Minnesota has so many cities that don't have a vibrant evangelical church / faith community within them. It has been a forgotten or untapped area of our church movement over the years. Smaller, mid-size cities present an entirely different challenge for pastors and leaders to establish a new church plant.

It does not mean that it can't be done, it simply takes a uniquely gifted person that understands smaller / mid-size city life and has a vision and passion to serve in an often close knit community.

Today was exciting to hear and see a man (family) that may be called of God to relocate and take on the challenge of planting in such an environment. Days like today, are simply inspiring to me. They lift me up and make me want to see God mountains.

So here we are again, exploring uncharted territory with a potential church planter.
So let's see what happens this time.
Let's see if some new begins in SE Minnesota in 2010 & 2011.

On the Job Training

There is always something to new to learn in life it's been said... and I totally agree.

I minister from the school of life, not a seninary of special university. Walking through life with God, reading his word and applying it to my life has taught me more than any formal eduaction ever could.

Right now, the "classroom" pf ministry, life, growth, dependence on God and deep water faith is at an on time high. I and never thought it could get higher than launching a church plant almost 6 years ago. But a the church a grown, God has continued to bring bigger, deeper even more amazing dreams and plans into my head and heart.

There is no script for this stuff.
You either trust God, follow, or get out of ministry.
I am willing to look like a fool for God.
I am willing to try what appears to impossible by human standards.
I just will never have a clear cut plan, pre-laid out process or clear dead-line of how it all plays out. I leave that totally to God, so that I may simply be a willing servant, teacher, leader and fellow sojourner with people.

God's hands on training transformed fishermen into world leaders and teachers.
I pray that I pass the training and testing of his "school" and leave a mark for God long after I am gone. I am so glad that God always has more room in his classroom. Open enrolement is awesome!

U-Turn on KNLW and Facebook

The excitement continues to grow and expand as we move forward with the U-turn remodel project. Go is announcing this new ministry in so many creative ways it blows me away.
Today a Facebook page was launched to act a hub in the social circles of peoples lives.
On day one over 40 accepted in and added it to their facebook profile.
Way exciting.

KNLW interviewed me today and will be airing a 3 min piece on the dreams and plans of the U-turn. Thanks Ken and Betsy.

There is such a buzz already and it's no where near ready to open.

Praise Godm, I open we all can continue to keep up with God's pace on this.

Words

Sometimes it amazes me how powerful words can be.
Powerful in both a positive and negative way.

For most of my life I have made living with words. As a professional broadcaster, youth leader and the last several years as a pastor/ teacher/ leader.

Words often paint pictures, help people connect, cast vision, and bring about emotional responses. Words can inspire, irritate and hurt people... no matter if you meant to or not.

"Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt you" is a an out right lie. Words are powerful, can do great damage, and often can cost you a lot.

But what bothers mean the most about words is... when you think you are trying your best to communicate and yet your words confuse people. The wrong, or unintentional word picture gets created, comes across and things spin out of control. It's at these times that the emotional response inflames things faster than a forest fire on a windy day. When these times happen, the confusion of words and intentions creates crazy responses from people. I have been both the confused crazy one and the confused communicator many times. We all have.

Jesus was an amazing communicator... yet so many were confused by what he was really trying to say. Many responded "crazy" because of how they heard and interrupted his words. Ultimately Jesus words became a threat to others that were also trying to teach and communicate. A war of words grew and grew.

Yet, as amazing as a communicator as Jesus was, I don't believe it was his words that really spoke the loudest.

IT WAS HIS ACTIONS BEHIND, BEYOND THE WORDS THAT SPOKE VOLUMES.

Action clarifies intentions, dreams, and plans.
Where words confuse and confound.... action adds definition.

So if my words every confuse, confound or even get you angry. I hope and pray that my actions, intentions and heart speak volumes more than my choice of words.

You see it's not if I will miss-speak or be miss-heard, but rather how often will it happen and what will happen because of it.

Zoning and Planning Appeals Board

Tonight we make our appeal to the county Zoning and Planning Board on our proposed Outreach Center location. Parking has been the last remaining giant that needs fall and clear the way for our long standing dream. We have done all that can humanly do.
Now it sits in the hands of God, the appeals board and the neighborhood.

Will they catch the vision and see how it will be a positive light for a neighborhood that desires to shine better for our city and region?
Will they see and hear the love we have for our city?
Will they understand that this bigger than one church?

God has lead us at lighting speed and has cleared so many paths. Almost daily over the last month I have, or others on our taskforce have received e-mails, phonecalls of people wanting to volunteer, donate and help. It has been amazing to see God go before us.

Tonight is a big night!
Will it be the giant that becomes bigger than we thought? Or will it be just another in a long line that falls, and shows more of God's glory and power?

I am confident that this giant will fall with a loud thud, which is followed by a big cheer towards the heavens for God. I invite you to pray and listen with us.

It's a big night, but we follow and serve a BIG GOD. THE GOD OF GIANT KILLERS!

It's the end of the world... and I feel fine!

Christmas is over. Once again we have prepared and explored the first coming of the Messiah.
The First Advent was all about God living a perfect, spotless life, revealing his deep love for us, and willing sacrificing Himself for us.
But before we move too fast, let’s stop and explore the second coming of God.
We live as the people of the Israel lived before Jesus was born. We live in the gap, between his first arrival and his return. But will we be caught by surprise, just as they were when Christ returns?

We are starting a new series this exploring the book of Revelation.
A book that deals with some mysterious and disturbing stuff. But over all it focuses on the second advent. Jesus ultimate return as KING JESUS.

Where you really explore the book of revelation, there is lots of hope.
We get glimpse of eternity with God.
That’s powerful stuff.

Yet most of us are afraid when we hear words like “end times”, “tribulation” and apocalypse. So as we start this series of hope I’m curious as to what your thoughts, fears and questions are regarding Revelations and Jesus return.

In order to make this series as practical as possible I want to search for the answers in light of the most common questions that we may have. Any questions, thoughts, fears.... let’s hear them now.

But remember, this is not a series to add to your fears but to bring HOPE to all.
Re-read Revelation 1:3 over and over again.
Remember that God promises us a blessing if we read, study and share what is recorded in John’s vision from Christ Jesus.

Are you excited about the second coming of Christ? or are you afraid?

Speed

Speed

Speed is an amazing thing.
We often complain that things don’t happen fast enough in our lives, or that God takes to long to ever move. We are often impatient people. Time and dreams seem to drag and go slow.

Then there are times when you can’t keep up. The speed as at warp-factor 7!
At those time we find ourselves questioning, doubting because... “It’s all happen too fast, something may go wrong”. The Speed that God moves blows us away and we want to slow things way do so that we can control them.

We have 9 months to prepare to be parents and receive our child into this world. It seems like forever when you first hear that you are expecting. Then that last month it feels like it all has gone by to fast. Then the day arrives and you stand there in awe, wonder.... “How did we get here and what do we do no?”

I remember a phrase that has stuck with me on speed and leadership. “The speed of the leader often dictates the speed of the team (organization / church)”

The issue of speed, too fast or too slow has always been with mankind.
The scriptures are full of examples showing how people of faith cried out God to move, move swift and then as God moves swift, they freeze up.

It’s strange that we often resist God even after we have prayed and prayed. Those moments hit leaders hard.

Speed is ever fluid. We do not control God and how He decides to lead.
Rather we are called to follow. Sometimes that following means it’s slow walk in the park and other times it’s a sprint that is wild and dangerous. Yet we are called to follow.

Right now I am and we as a church our experiencing SPEED BUMPS.
God is moving lighting fast. Just this morning I received two more surprise phone calls that completely confirm where God is taking us with regard to the Outreach Center. I am in awe!

Each phone call, e-mail, follow up has and will cause speed bumps. It’s part of being fallen humans trying to follow a perfect God. Father God that always has our best interest. So what do you do with speed and speed bumps?

You try your best, and trust Father God.
There are too many examples of when we question, doubt and try to control God’s timing that things really unravel and become a bigger mess. So let’s follow God no matter what speed he moves. If it appears to be slow or mach 5. Let’s have the faith of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Faith tom follow God on a wild goose chase.

Crazy Love - Best Life... Later

Best Life... later

The last several weeks have been an amazing fast-paced ride with God. As the year was getting close to wrapping up it appeared that our dream or securing a place for our outreach center / coffee -shop would not happen. Then God opened some amazing doors and moved us from our “smaller” dream to the “bigger” end goal dream of a site where we could open up a night club. It has happened so fast, it’s freaky.

We have not signed an agreement yet, but the terms of the agreement are almost set to both sides satisfaction. Now the question of the week, will we step up, sacrifice, look crazy to others and really bring this dream to life. Sunday, Dec. 6th we began with $4,000 in our special outreach fund. As I write this (Dec. 8th) we have just over $9,000 actual cash in this fund. That is truly a YEAH GOD!

There are giants to face in this process. giants like...
Bathroom construction and cost
Painting
Remodeling
Monthly budget matters
Volunteers to main the club once it opens
Moving offices, equipment
Re-inventing the church from the theaters to a night club vibe
and more.

Yet God is already providing,
50 table stands
50 chairs (plus maybe another 80)
Bathroom fixtures
The money to give a deposit and first month rent

I ask that first and for most you praise God with us for His provision.
Pray with us for the exciting site of the old Quality Woods store (Hwy 14 & 63)
Pray for continued financial resources and donations.
Pray that God may be glorified and hundreds reach if this site really opens up.

We are on the edge of a dream... do you want to step into a high risk adventure with God, or wait for the great adventure... later?

Crazy Love - Leftovers

Leftovers

I am not a big fan of leftovers. It’s not that I want to waste food, it’s just not normally as good as the first time it was served up. When Francis Chan titled chapter 5, “Leftovers to a Holy God” I knew it was not going to pretty. I was right, it is a deeply challenging chapter, especially coming after “Lukewarm” (Chapter 4).

But Chan touches on things that I have long struggled with personally.
How can we call ourselves real Jesus Followers (Disciples) if we only give God leftovers (time, money, effort, love, etc.) I have never believed that just “believing” was all that God asks of us. No He wants a really, vibrant relationship. “All or nothing” His love for us was “all of nothing”, our marriages are created to be “all or nothing” and yet we don’t believe that God would require that type of love (action love) of us.

I shared my view of Black Friday this weekend... wow did that surprise some people!
We can manage to get out of bed, grab some coffee, and race to get in line by 3 or 4 a.m. to not miss out on the great door busters deals, but we can’t get up for a 9 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. service each Sunday. We can’t serve on a volunteer grid and help set up, teach young kids, greet at the door. We can’t help pack food boxes from 9 - noon once a month.... but we can commit, plan and do door busters?

“Where you treasure is, there your heart will be also”, words of Jesus Christ.

In Malachi God warned that “leftover” sacrifices have left God wishing that someone would close the temple (church) doors. God would have us shut down ministries, than continue getting Him the leftovers. Is God worth our best or not? Does our love for God natural draw us to service and sacrifice?

King David said, “I will not offer a sacrifice that cost me nothing” Modern translation.... “no pain no gain”

This is not about having us serve and give more out of guilt, this is about having such a love for God, we naturally poor out our best to Him and others.

Ask yourself why are so many churches and denominations closing and getting smaller and smaller? Could it be.... too many leftovers have been served and God is doing what He warned us about in Malachi’s day. Could it be that seekers can see when it’s not real love.... but leftovers. Why would they come back to a place that doesn’t really, radically love and follow God. I wouldn’t! Really I wouldn’t.

This idea of giving God leftovers deeply effects God’s heart. Twice Jesus cleared the merchants from the temple. Once with a whip! God does not want us playing church. partially following... no he wants “All or nothing”

What are you giving.... your best or leftovers to a Holy God that loves you like Crazy and gave nothing but the best for you? 

Black Friday.... really?

Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving.... the day set a side to honor and praise God for all the many blessings of the past year. (Like we really need a holiday to remind to do that? Oh yeah... we are American’s) The Turkey is barely been digested and our new holiday.. “Black Friday” is all the rage around the USA.

Really after saying thank for all our blessing we need run out and buy MORE!
Run out a 3 or 4 a.m. because that’s when all the best deals are happening.
I think Satan is laughing his head off at our materialistic world.
Rather than sleep, get rested and enjoy family... we’d rather get up crazy early, push and shove in order to try and get that “door buster” or “super savings on select items”.

Really having more is really worth it!

The average person live on $2.00 per day in this world, while we are in line today. Between Black Friday and Christmas Eve, we in America will spend more than 400 billion dollars. By Dec. 15th, we won’t even remember who gave us half of our new stuff.

Now I am not against gifts. I love both giving and receiving gifts.
But when we must get up long before the sun wakes up.... something is wrong.
When we go from thankfulness to credit card debt in 24 hours or less.... something is wrong.

Ask yourself who created “Black Friday”.... the retail outlets of America. Who benefits from “Black Friday”.... the retail stores of the USA.
Ask yourself did the long, early morning, crazy shopping line radically change yours or anyone else's lives to day?

Maybe “Black Friday” is the best name for what is happening today. Maybe it best describes our hearts. Dark and black from the love of things, rather than the love of people.

But then again as a friend of mine mentioned this morning... “maybe this is like the fishing opener for women.”

 

Crazy Love

This week we kick off a new discussion / book study based of the national best seller "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan. The book starts off at an easy pace and then at Chapter 4 explodes with some serious challenge stuff.

Chan rights "this book is written for those who want more Jesus. It is for those who are bored with what American Christianity offers. It is for those who don't want to plateau, those who would rather die before their convictions do."

I personally have been renewed, re-energized and deeply challenged by this book to take my faith up several notches. My prayer is that what we as individuals and a church community experience between Christmas will forever change us into living out an even deeper, crazier love for God and others.

Out of tbe darkness

It's been a few weeks since I have posted. The past few months have been some of the darkest, toughest of my ministry years, the life of this church and my personal family.
Spiritual warfare is real and it takes alot out of you...on so many levels.

But now I sense that we are moving out of that darkness and rolling again.
Personally I am more focused. I am feeling confident in handing things off to people, current and newer leaders. There is something to be said for coming through tough times together as a family, with the Holy Spirit. It pulls even closer. Oh yeah we've had some really intense interactions as of late... but we are also stronger for having not run from them. It's not fun, but it's been beneficial.

I believe that there is a new desire to advance again, welcome and intergrate newcomers as well. That is exciting. I am excited, because once again I have seen God work through hard times, I have seen His people rise up and I am freer to do what I am called to do.

It's good to see some light!

GPS #1 - Directionally Challenged

This week we began a new discussion series called GPS. Our goal over the next few weeks is to learn "systems" or "practices" that will help us grow our relationship with God, so that we on really see where He would have us go.

The trouble is that most of us are directionally challenged.
Instead of finding direction and meaning from God, we finding money, career, power, status, family and friends, etc. We set our life by the stuff of earth instead of the tings of Heaven. Then as life goes by we yell at God that we have no idea where we are going, how we got here, or why our life isn't moving and exciting.

I believe that this directionally challenged life partly because we are asking the wrong question. Most of ask, "where am I know, and where should I be going next."
This is based off of a self-centered few of life. We start with life now... "me now" and the seek direction on life later.... "me future."

When maybe the real question is "where is God moving and how can I join with him."
This directional question is based on the movement of God, his dreams, his desires... not ours. It's a much bigger and much more exciting question... because God is limitless in what is doing and wants to do in our world.

Jesus said, "My Father is always at work, and so am I" (John 5:17)
Then he says, "I tell you the truth, the son can do nothing by himself. He only does what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does the son also does." (John 5:19)

That is amazing and very insightful for us. Set your course by what God is already doing. Start looking for God action in our lives, churches, community and world.

The problem is we can't see what God is doing unless we address a blinding issue in our lives.... STUBBORNNESS. Read the story of Balaam and his donkey in Numbers Chapter 22. A great spiritual man was blinded by his own stubbornness. God had to creatively get Balaam's attention and once again remind his servant to live a humble life of obedience.

Since I can be a really stubborn person at times, I love reading this story. It reminds me that if God can have an "Ass" see spiritual things before the "rock-star spiritual giant Balaam, maybe I can begin to see the things of God as well.

Are you directionally challenged today?
Ask yourself.... "am I a stubborn person"?
Ask yourself.... " am I looking for where God is already moving, or am i trying to have things my way, and make them look really spiritual."

Rites of Passage

There was a time when parents had the honor of blessing their children. This blessing came as the parents saw that the child was "coming of age", or fully able to handle what was been passed on to them.

Our world no longer embraces this idea of rite of passage with a parents blessing.

No now we have a world where most kids believe, "I deserve it." Our children no longer want that special moment with mom and dad... instead they just want the stuff that was once seen as a blessing.

Cars are now seen as a given in a kids life.... not a gift or sign of coming of age.
Cellphones are standard issue to every child.... not a tool that can be afforded and used properly at the right times.
Getting a savings account or check book are no longer seen as great teaching moments, something that need wisdom and guidance... they are seen as absolutes in a kids life.

So many special rites of passage, long term memory moments have been taken, removed or erased from the family of today. It used to be extra special to when dad when and said, "today is the day we start car shopping together, let me show what I have learned. Let's got kick some tires."

Throughout the Bible there are stories of how the blessing and rite of passage was a major event in family and nations life. David and Solomon, Jacob and Esau, Elijah to Elisha, just name a few.

No rites of passage moments appear to evaporating and with it goes a big part of parenthood, family, and memories. I think it is a sad, sad statement on our world today. The objects of the blessing and rite are now more important than the experience and the personal blessing, honor, smile from mom and dad.

As a parent of a senior in high school... this sad reality is hitting home with me.
I wish, I pray that my kids wanted and longed for the blessing, the smiles and impute from their parents... instead of just the stuff. Days are short, and memories and moments are even fewer.

Just some observations and ramblings from a guy, husband and father.

Farve Nation

Tonight the Packers meet the Vikings for the first time since Brett Farve retired (for the first time) and the rejoined the NFL. This will be the first meeting of Farve with his old team mates. 16b years at GB and now he is a Viking. How strange it will be for so many tonight.

I am a Packer fan first.
Viking fan second and a Farve third.

I am really looking forward to a fun game. Rodgers vs Farve. Packer vs Vikings (always good game), cheese heads vs goldie locks.

I predict that Packers will win. But it will be a long, intense game.

You never know who is in the crowd

We say it over and over with our leadership team, we pray and ask God to prepare us each Sunday to serve and love each newcomer, regular attender. “Any given Sunday, we have no idea who is in the crowd.”

It has taken me two days to put something to paper about the tragic suicide on Sunday afternoon (9-20-09). Plans had been made for me to meet with Chad and Stephanie Fisher, along with a seeking friend....Brent. Brent was Chad’s twin sister (Candi) ex-boyfriend, father of their young son. Brent and Candi had met while both living a life consumed by Meth. Both had become clean in recent years and had begun to put pieces of life back together in a healthier way.

Both were seekers of sorts.

Brent had begun to ask lots of spiritual / faith questions of Chad.  Saturday, Brent helped several people from Journey paint Dave Reynolds home.
Sunday, Brent attended our Sunday morning gathering at the Chateau Theaters.  This Sunday we continued our series on Forgiveness.... the real “f” word and focused on forgiving the offender. How do you forgive someone that has really hurt you.
We showed a media clip from an independent film called “THE GAP”.   The clip showed a man seeking forgiveness from his ex-wife that he had cheated on.  The women asked tough questions, but in the end granted forgiveness and let him “go in peace with God.”

Little did we know that this media scene would be played out a few hours later between Brent and Candi. Instead of meeting after church with Chad, Steph and myself.... Brent asked to meet another day.

4:30 p.m. the phone rings and Chad fears Brent has driven off to commit suicide after a brief meeting with his sister Candi. By 5 p.m. Brent is found barely alive. By 7 p.m. he has passed away at St. Marys hospital.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS IN THE CROWD.

Brent was seeking.
Brent heard a powerful and dangerous message on forgiveness.
Brent heard a clear gospel message of how Christ blood, death on the cross is what frees us from our sin and is all God see’s if we are his children. If we have accepted Christ, sought God’s forgiveness... God sees us as clean because of Jesus.

We pray and hope that Brent gave his life to Christ / God before his passing.
He was seeking.
He was hurting. 
He was trapped in a dark place that the enemy did not want him to come out of.

I am reminded of the words from Peter. These words have new power and meaning.  
"8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters[ all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are.
10 In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. 11 All power to him forever! Amen." (1 Peter 5:8-11)

I believe that Brent is with our loving King and Savior.  I believe that the church will rise up and serve the Fisher family.  I believe that will be glorified in a bold powerful way some how.  I believe that new passion and zeal will come of this as we remember  YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS IN THE CROWD.

May be always be prepared to give an answer for our faith and serve others.

Forgivness #2 - My Own Prison

This Sunday I shared how many of us live in a prison of our own making. This prison has a name, it’s called “UN-FORGIVENESS”.
This unforgiveness can be because we have not forgiven others, we have not forgiven ourselves or we have not sought out God’s forgiveness.

Unforgiveness can become a dark and deadly prison. The longer we choose to not address the sin in our lives, run for giving or receiving forgiveness the darker the cell or cage becomes. For many people these prison becomes more intense and dangerous as we begin to “self-medicate” ourselves because we can’t deal with the pain and truth of unforgiveness. Rather that face the issue head on we settle for momentary “high” to numb the pain, distract us from the real issue. We “self-medicate” in so many ways, some more dangerous than others. Sex, drugs, alcohol, food, movies , TV, etc. Anything that creates a false sense of happiness, but in the end only numbs us to the real pain of the sin.

This self made prison of unforgiveness kills not only us, but radically effects those around us. The side effects of a “self-medicate” life can be, divorce, loss of Job, anger, bitterness, rage, depression, and suicide. And the tragic thing is that we have no one to blame but ourselves. Because we have chosen a life of unforgiveness of some kind.

King Saul had a tormenting spirit come upon him as he avoided dealing with his sin and other life issues. He choose to not seek forgiveness and he spun out of control. Young David, tried to sooth King Saul by playing the harp (self-medicate). It didn’t work. The bitterness, rage, anger, hatred, self-worth side effects only got worse. How sad... it never had to be that way. Freedom was Saul’s if only he had faced his sin, worked through the forgiveness issues and restored the relationships in his life.

This self made prison of unforgiveness is made by us and our chooses... not someone else. Stop blaming others for your addictions and nasty attitudes and behaviors. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul gives great action steps to freeing ourselves from this prison of unforgiveness.

Philippians 4:8-9 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The Keys are in your hands...do you want freedom.... start by addressing the sin in your live. Look in the mirror and get real. Then “fix your thoughts” on the truth.... God’s truth. You are loved, you are forgiven, your of value, etc. Start looking for the good in life, rather the dark lies of the enemy.
Then “Practice” what God has taught you. Really, follow Jesus Christ and how he lived, loved, and forgave. His was a life of truth and grace. A wide open adventure... not a dark prison.
And if you are “self-medicating”, get help today. Be honest before you really explode.

Rather than, anger, bitterness, rage, you will finally know God’s peace.

The choose is yours.... the keys are in your hands... what will you choose to do?

This week we kick of a big series, as we explore forgiveness.
Forgiveness, restoration of broken relationships is the central message of Jesus Christ and our churches. So why is real forgiveness so hard to give, receive, accept and find healing in?

Let me start out with this challenge.... Saying "I'm sorry" is NOT FORGIVENESS!
It's a short cut, a cop-out.
Forgiveness is much, much more.
Forgiveness is costly.
Forgiveness is deeply personal.
Forgiveness is freeing for the both the offender and the offended.

Are you prepared to explore the real truth of forgiveness?
Are you willing to admit that forgiveness is something we all want, but hard to give?

Farve the Viking

Well it happened, Brett Farve signed the contract and suited up yesterday with the Minnesota Vikings. Several thoughts and then a question.
First, I have not heard many Viking fans cheering on how "great this is."
Is that because they all see how weak of a Coaching staff, and ownership "leadership" organization the Vikings have become. Sure they now have Farve, but it cost them so much respect, pride and dignity along the way. Green Bay is own by the share holders of Wisconsin. The Vikings are now owned by Brett Farve.

If you are any the Quaterbacks on the Viking team, how do you feel this morning. How confident are you in your abilty, value, worth. How much do you trust the Vikings front office.

Now that training camp is over in Mankato. The hard hot and humid two a day work outs are done, aren't you a bit pissedc off that the "hero" of the franchise missed all of that ugly team building work?

By the way.... has anyone thought of the fact that Farve, never plays well in a domed facility? Don't the Viking play in the METEODOME? What are giving up home field advantage with Farve?

Finally.....Post your predictons here.... How many games will Farve play this year for the Vikings?

I Predict that by week 7 of the regular season, Farves stats will be falling and he will either get hurt or hang it up mid-season. He simply can't play an entire season at the level they need to win.

How Did I get here?

Lately I've had thoughts of "How did I get here"?

The thought revolves around the idea that I have been married for 20 years, my oldest daughter is going to be a Senior in High School, and our church is now 5 1/2 years old.
Which means I have been out of broadcasting for 10 years.... but I was in broadcasting for 10 years which seem only like yesterday.

How did I get here?

Is there a point in life when the clock, days, nights and months speed up?

I have not had mid-life crises (yet), but I can understand why many do.
It's so strange to wake up and wonder how this all happened, what really go you hear and what's next.

Sickness

It's never really fun being sick. But for me, it's extra hard being sick on the weekend and missing out on our weekly church gathering. This last weekend I got hit with a head and throat cold that hurt. Each time that I talked, coughed or sneezed it felt like my throat would catch on fire.

Man I'm I glad that God has placed such a solid team of people around me a Journey. On this weekend we already had some people covering for others that had planned to be gone, and then I drop off the radar at the last minute. But with the team that we have and the heart beat to "do what it takes" each week I knew not to worry. And I was right.
I've heard a lot of positive feed back on how everyone pulled together and it was a great weekend with God and family.

You see I can handle being sick if nothing is going on a lot easier than something great is happening. I hate missing out on what God is doing. Saturday night I had planned to go to a small gathering about dreaming big dreams for God. Man I was so excited to be around a bunch a dreamers. But once again my being sick stopped me. But Dave Reynolds got to go and said it was awesome. So others in the church family got to experience something new and exciting in my absence.

I hate being sick and missing out, but sometimes it's good to sit on the sidelines and watch what God does through others.

Potential - Kirk (Story of Gideon)

This week we launched our new discussion series, "at the movies" with the mega-hit film of the year STAR TREK. There several themes to explore but the biggest one was the theme of POTENTIAL. Things have changed with the new time-line of Kirk, Spock and McCoy.
Much is the same as we have know it, but much has changed.

Kirk is not the "stack of books" that was described in the classic series.
No, now he is simply drifting through life, bars, girls and bar fights are his way.
Until Capt. Pike dares him to rise to his potential. The potential that given to him partly by the sacrifice of his father. (George Kirk).

Gideon in the OT has a similar challenge put to him by the "angel of the Lord" in Judges chapter 6. The angel calls young Gideon a "Mighty Hero" as he is hiding in a cave.

In both cases each man clearly has some natural ability and talent going for them. But simply living in that ability is not really getting them anywhere. Not until they choose to accept the dare / challenge and act. To choose to act and reach our potential is so hard, especially if we have gotten by on our natural ability, look, smarts, etc.

But your natural ability is NOT you full potential.
Man have people responded to that phrase this week. (Thanks to God for that one!)
Ability is one thing, achieving our full potential takes commitment, work, dedication and help. To reach our full potential we need others to support us, challenge us and even dare us to do better. What potential is locked inside of us... most will never know. What potential is within our local churches.... many don't really care to even ask the question.

God created us in His image. That's got to mean that each of us has amazing potential.
I dare you to rise up.
I dare you to not stay the way you are, but to press forward with God.

Potential is such an unknown thing. I wonder what my full potential for God's glory is. I wonder Journey's full potential for God's Kingdom is. I long to see it.

Goose on the Loose hunt

Really all this for MJ?

The past several days the world appears to have gone crazy celebrating the life of Micheal Jackson. A man that made a living singing and writing songs. No one will ever deny his talent. I'd even say, "God given gift". Yet how that gift was wasted.
What happened to the young boy that sang as a part of the Jackson 5 and seemed so happy?
As MJ life went it become a human train wreck.
He was fearful of almost everything it seemed... except making more and more money.
There were serious doubts about his behavior with kids and "neverland".
There was his plastic surgeries that morphed his face into something.., indescribable.
And his death is another "rock and roll" mystery story.

The world is celebrating a life gone wrong. Celebrating at the cost of millions of dollars while our economy is in a serious mess. He is being celebrated and used by his own father to promote a new record label and make millions more. Doesn't anyone see something wrong in all of this?

Doesn't anyone see how sad this all is?

There are far more important matters to focus on, give money to and celebrate than the life of a socially messed up man and the millions he made promoting that messed up way of life. I am choosing to ignore it all.
No 20/20 TV specials, no MTV highlights of his career... nothing.
MJ was a man, a lost, broken, hurting man. For that I feel a great loss.

But I will not join in and celebrate that brokenness gone wild.

No my hope and prayer is that the world will come to it's senses, see the brokenness of this life and WAKE UP. He is not the first to show us how loving the world can kill us... and he won't be the last. I only wish.... many, many, many would wake up and look to the real KING... Jesus Christ.

In a nut shell... the "king of this world", Satan. Had himself a big party this week... and a great many people of the world join right in. How sad!

Journey Camp week

This week we began a five day adventure at Camp Victory.
We are partnering with Camp Victory and having an "uncivilized" experience for 10th - college age. I'm hoping and praying that the week will be very personal and life changing. I hope that these campers begin to see Christ in a new way. Rather than Jesus a white guy that wore a robe, sandals, had long hair and beard and talked softly.

No Jesus was a revolutionar, because he not only talked about loving people... he actually did it. The way that he loved people, blew everyone away. It wasn't religious talk... it was relationship based. That relationship focused life of love and forgiveness transformed people and ignited a anger in others to stop Jesus movement.

This week, I pray that a new revolution of the heart and soul begins in these campers that triggers a chain reaction in others. Reactions both for against Christ.

Chasing the Goose

This week we began a new discussion series called "Chasing the Goose".
I've been planning a series on the book of Acts for a long time, and I finally got inspired by another pastors book and study material called - "Chasing the Goose."
Mark Batterson's study focus more on the power of the Holy Spirit over all of history. I took some of his concepts and added them to what I was already preparing on Acts.
What I think comes out of all of this is a very exciting and personallyn challenging series on really following God's Spirit on a crazy adventure... a "wild goose chase " at times!

Some of what I'll be sharing these next few weeks comes from a personal challenge my directors gave to me late 2008. Bill and Rachel asked me to,"study more what it means to be spirit-led, and lead us that way." It's not that we haven't been Spirit-led at Journey or in my personal life... we have. But as I've seen and as can be illustrated, we've caged the Holy Spirit. We've tamed down, the unpredictable power and movement of God in our lives and churches. I hate that and I do want let the Spirit escape and move wildly and freely again. What this looks like... I honestly have no idea, only that there will be more supernatural surprises in store for all of us. Plus, more and more people will want to know God.

As we jump into this study of how the early church was birthed and exploded on the scene I am struck with a interesting battle presenting Acts chapter 1. Jesus has lived, died, rose, ministerd forv 40 days after the resurrection, commmissioned the disciples to "Go make more disciples". Then he says WAIT! Go to Jerusalem, do nothing... wait for my gift of the Holy Spirit to be your power source.

I hate the tension.... really I do between GO and WAIT!
I hate it because I have lived and served in Christian enviroments where waiting is all that we do. We wait and wait for everything to be perfect, predictable and safe.
There are so many people waiting for God to do something.. they are missing out on what God is doing... because it's to radical, costly or unsure.

I am all for waiting, praying, seeking God's will and leading...but not at the expense of never going. Throughout the scriptures many great things happened as men and women boldly stepped out in faith, followed the Spirits leading and God was honored.

The tension between Go and WAIT is tough... because is the God of creation and creativity and does all do things the same. So how do you when to Go and when to Wait?

I hope over the next few weeks we all learn how "Chasing after the goose" will help us answer that question. This is not about just the BIG SUPERNATURAL type events God does. This is about learning to personally follow God's Spirit, be a witness where he calls us to go and go boldly. Fathers Day 2009

What a great weekend for this Fathers Day.
Saturday Carefest at Camp Victory.
Saturday night dinner out with Family, early Father Day gifts.... Guitar Hero Smash Hits!
Then Church in the Park with Journey.

Men and their grills.... it's a simple yet powerful way to celebrate and honor one another. I have much to be grateful for a father. A super wife (Cyndi), three fantastic kids (Abbi, Sarah and Hannah). Above all the people in my life, above all the people we grilled with, ate with and served with.... you matter the most and made it all he more special.

Thanks and for all you other dads.... I hope you as blessed as I am by those in your life that make up your family.

3 Passions

Journey is passionate about three things.
Reaching People
Growing Deeper
Honoring God.

For the most part I thing people understand #1 & #3. They may not live them out to the fullest or want to participate.... but I believe that most people get them.
#2 on the other hand, I think people resist.
Yup, I hear plenty of people saying that they want to grow in their faith, understand God and Jesus more and more... yet they never act on their words. Growing Deeper requires a certain commitment to take personal ownership for ones own relationship with God and others. I think we resist partly because we've been led to believe it just naturally happens. Or we believe, it's someone else responsibility to make the first move and get us growing. Not true. Faith is a personal thing, that gets worked out in community with others. Life itself is a laboratory for faith to grow. But we have to be willing to participate... not just wish for it.

Growing deeper also requires us to be vulnerable with others. Jesus taught his disciples how to serve, minister and grow together. I don't see any other way around this issue. If you really want to grow your faith, you must open up your heart and soul to others, develop relationships, risk being hurt... and commit to being held accountable.

I believe that there are a lot of well meaning Christians that really want to grow, but are allowing fear and an over dependency on the church and formal programs do the job for them. It bothers me that so many wish and talk about growing deeper, and yet so few actually set aside the time to make it happen.

As a church we're passionate about growing deeper.
As a pastor I'm driven by this passion.
As a man I love being in a deeper relationship with God and man.
Yes it takes work... but it's so worth it and more often than not... it's so much fun.

Ebenezers

Monday morning I fly out to Washington, DC and will be visiting my cousin before I settle into a fun filled day with Mark Batterson and the National Community Church (http://theaterchurch.com/) staff that run Ebenezers Coffee shop. (http://ebenezerscoffeehouse.com/) DC's #1 Coffee shop and it's an outreach effort of a church that also meets in a theater. (See the connections)
I hope and pray that this trip will help me, help our team as we continue to press forward with the 10 South Broadway site of our possible outreach center / coffee shop.

I am grate that God as opened up a small door. new ministry relationship with Mark and NCC. I pray that this may be the start of new friendship and a time of personal growth.

31 day Challenge

This Sunday we kicked off a new discussion series "Wisdom For Living" based on the book of Proverbs.
At the end of the morning I placed a church-wide challenge to search, seek, cry out, read and explore one Proverb per day for the next 31 days. It has been really exciting to hear people's reaction to the challenge and their desire to seek more of God's wisdom rather than man's wisdom. Several people are journaling on face-book about their daily readings.

The biggest challenge that see for life transformation is allowing Wisdom (God) to move from the head to the heart. Only 12 inches... but it's so tough for so many to allow to happen. Why is that? If Wisdom is worth chasing after, why don't we let it get to our heart and really change us. Could it because we do believe that change will come and that's the very reason we keep the heart locked up. We are afraid of God size change.

But why fear a loving father, with all that wisdom for life?

12 inches... is that what's keep me and you from really being transformed and experiencing a better life?
12 inches.... what waste of space.

Goose Lessons

This week I got "goosed" at the Exponential Church planters conference on Orlando.
As I got "goosed" I had to do the chicken dance in front of a packed room of pastors and fellow church planters.
Thankfully... neither Bill Elliingson or Rachel Strouf (who made the trip with me) saw me do the dance.

But besides being "goosed" I was reminded of a powerful leadership/ life lesson from geese.
As the geese fly, the form a V-shape. One goose takes the point, while others fall in line on either wing. And then the next, and the next, and the next geese do the same. As they flap their wings together, they are able to fly 71% further than if they were trying to do it all alone. Plus as after awhile, as you get tried. You slide out of formation, drift to the end the V-Shape and allow someone else to take point, and allow all the other geese flapping their weeks help make your efforts easier.

This is how a vision driven church should move as well. All together, behind a common, mission, vision and goal.
If we form up intentionally together... we'll fly further and faster than if we were all "lone rangers" serving God.
The key is that EVERYONE must flap their wings, use their gifts, top help us get to where God wants us to go.
We all needs breaks, but we must not fall out of line.
We all will have our chance to lead out, but that doesn't make you any more important than the goose at the end.

As we move forward into another exciting and outreach focus Summer.
As we intentionally pursue the Outreach Center site.
Believe and commit to help us lighten the load, flying further than we can dream, as we seek to follow God's calling and direction.

Exponential Conference '09

Today was day one of of (if the largest) church planting conferences on all North America. About 3,000 planting pastors and leaders are expected to be at this years conference which is held at First Baptist of Orlando.
Today I tried to sit on a session that supposed to focus on leadership development. Man was I disappointed.
So I jumped to several other break out sessions and finally ended up at "Creating a Disciple Making Movement" with Jim Putman.
Rachel was sitting in on that one and was excited by how Jim was presenting and the information, ideas and concepts being shared. I was excited to hear how much of his presentation links up with what we are already doing at Journey. And how there were several solid take away concepts that may helps us improve our focus on "making fully devoted followers of Jesus".

I had the change to talk briefly with Mark Batterson about their coffee shop and our possible site for our outreach/ coffee shop.
Ebenezer is a great place and Washington and I look forward to learning more from Mark and his team in the coming weeks.

Could this be it?

For five years we have prayed and searched for a place to create out outreach center. A coffee shop style place for people to relax, surf the net, listen to live music, connect and have spiritual conversations with friends, family and strangers. We have dreamed of a place downtown Rochester, that has plenty of parking, great signage and easy access. It has been very hard to find all of things, plus having it be a place that we could put some blood, sweat and tears into.

Well today I believe that God showed us the place.
Everything on our dream list and more!
The possibilities are unbelievable!

Today, begins a new chapter in prayer, focused research and planning.
I believe that there are times that God provides the amazing and he wants to jump in.
As far as I and the other Directors can see, this is the place and we need to jump with God.
The Journey Cafe may not be far from reality!

Dreams are just dreams until you step into them.
I pray, that we step into this and God provides over and above what we could ever ask or imagine!

Resurrectuion Day

Resurrection Day or Easter as most people call is an amazing day. It's a day of bitter joy, freedom, and new chances.
As a follower of Jesus, Resurrection Day defines my life. I am free to live completely in the knowledge that God loves me.
More than that, I am able to live life without fear, because God are I.... our relationship is restored.

The Apostle Paul writes in the book of Romans, "And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love." romans 8:38)
Nothing!
As a follower of Jesus, still living in a fallen, broken world it's easy to forget that no matter what I am ok with God. Not because of anything that I have done, or not done. But simply because of all that He has done for me through his son Jesus. As often as my kids blow it, they know deep down inside that they will always have mom and dads love. Yes the mistakes and pains of life may hurt and leave lasting marks... but my love for my three girls will never go away. Nothing, can separate me and my family!
The truth that because of Christ's death and resurrection God feels the same way about me is amazing and humbling.

But I don't get to just live because of Christ. I get to LIVE!
The apostle Paul writes, "Despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us." (romans 8:37)
Overwhelming victory paints a picture of victory from a intense battle. Celebration breaks out in the streets as enemy forces are driven back and away from homes and families. That's how free we are in God's love.

The tomb is empty.
The Savior lives and walks among his people.
He longs to give life to everyone.... all we need to do is believe and accept this amazing free gift.
Do you want to be resurrected from your every day normal life of pain and suffering, loneliness and hurt.
Be convinced as Paul and I are... "Nothing can separate you from God once you've joined his family.
I pray, that this resurrection day many souls are set free, and we see people celebrating, dancing in the streets a life is renewed.

Anniversarys

This is an exciting, exciting time of year for me and my family. April is one celebration after another.
Today marks Cyndi's and mine 20 year anniversary!
It has been an amazing adventure and life with my life partner. At times it seems like we just got married, jumped through a time portal and ended up with a daughter as a Junior in H.S and Twins that are about to enter Middle School.
How did all of that happen?

Plus we celebrated our 5th anniversary as a church. Honestly there were so many that never thought we'd make it to our first or second year celebration. But by the grace of God we have and over 50 kids and adults celebrated with a pizza party and old picture memories.

Yeah it's a party month.

Seeing God

This week the question of really seeing God vs "seeing what you want to believe" has come up several times.
I agree that often we have the ability to see what we want to see in things. Believe because we want to believe in good not evil and so forth. So how we know really know that we are seeing God move and work today verse wishful thinking?

I personally listen to life stories.
How is pray answered.
How has a life been unexpectedly touched, blessed, even rescued for certain destruction.
Yes, I choose to believe in God and his movement in my life and the lives of others.
But as I choose to believe, I actually see more and more that confirms my choice to believe.

I know that there are many, that of a miracle of biblical proportions happened today they would still deny, write if off and not choose to believe. It happen during all of Jesus ministry and it will happen until the end of time.

I'm curious how do others "see God" and know that he is still moving among us?
How much does simple faith verse "having to see it to believe it" work in your life.

I do know the more that I pray, seek God, ask to see His movement.... the more clearly I see it.
It's like the wind... you can't see it, but you do see the effects of the wind.

Exciting Sunday

Every week we gather and we say that we expect God to do the unexpected. We pray, plan and expect the amazing to take place because God desires all of mankind to know him. Well this Sunday was a multiply God sighting Sunday.
First we had great attendance in our 9:00 a.m. gathering
Second we had record attendance in our 10:30 gathering!
As we dedicated two young kids from two different families... we had extra family, friends, co-workers... plus a bunch of people checking us out for the first time, It was exciting
Our kids ministry areas had a total of 30 people (kids and adults)

Then as we were tearing down and packing up, or financial secretary pulled me aside and show me a had written note with cash clipped to it (several hundred dollars). The note read, "Use these for someone on need."
Wow - we have never had a gift like that, from an unknown person, for some unknown need.
Never!

All day like I prayed, thought and meditated on "God give us a real need, to help some one big thing in there lives. Don't have us use $20 here and $20 there. Make it clear that this gift gets you correctly."

Just before 5 p.m., I checked my e-mail Sunday afternoon and received a personal request for help from a newcomer.
The requested amount was more than what we were given, but we could make a big difference with this person, their need and their life. I shared this at our Sunday night LIFE Group and everyone was in tears over the generous gift and the unique need.
God provided in advance, before the request was spoken.
That's a great God sighting.

We desire to a faith community that experiences the power of God and see people become fully devoted followers of Jesus.
Days like Sunday, refresh us, encourage us, inspire us to continue to reach out and risk more and more.

"Lord may you bless that unknown giver and may we continue to see more and more of your amazing power, grace and miracles. May you Lord be praised."

I pray that we see more days like this. Not for our sake, but for the sake of others!
I hope you come expecting to see what God will do this week.
I hope that you are watching to see how God is moving every day. Take note and celebrate His great deeds.

Mutipersonality Required

This week I shared with other local pastors some of the high and lows of serving the faith community of Journey. As I spoke I asking, "does it help to have a split personality?" They said with smiles on the faces, "YES".
There are days when you go from one exciting meeting, life moment to the deepest most painful moment in a persons life.
It's not that you're faking it, but to best serve people you must be able to meet them where they are at.
"Weep when they weep, rejoice when they rejoice."
For some of us this "split personality" comes almost natural and actually helps is serve and show the love of God.
To other it is a burden, comes off fake and hurts our efforts.

I wonder how others view those of us that can make the jump and go up and down at a turn of a switch.

Is it helpful?
Is it fake?
Is it a natural part of serving?

I must admit that having this personality and making quick adjustments can wipe me out at times. That is, I go to bed... emotionally dead. Yet, I get up, excited to do it all over again the next day. Am I strange, or is that the amazing way God makes us uniquely gifted/ wired for ministry?

News Report: More Americans say they have no religion

More Americans say they have no religion By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer – Mon Mar 9, 12:14 am ET A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out o of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all.
Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey.
Northern New England surpassed the Pacific Northwest as the least religious region, with Vermont reporting the highest share of those claiming no religion, at 34 percent. Still, the study found that the numbers of Americans with no religion rose in every state.
"No other religious bloc has kept such a pace in every state," the study's authors said.
In the Northeast, self-identified Catholics made up 36 percent of adults last year, down from 43 percent in 1990. At the same time, however, Catholics grew to about one-third of the adult population in California and Texas, and one-quarter of Floridians, largely due to Latino immigration, according to the research.
Nationally, Catholics remain the largest religious group, with 57 million people saying they belong to the church. The tradition gained 11 million followers since 1990, but its share of the population fell by about a percentage point to 25 percent.
Christians who aren't Catholic also are a declining segment of the country.
In 2008, Christians comprised 76 percent of U.S. adults, compared to about 77 percent in 2001 and about 86 percent in 1990. Researchers said the dwindling ranks of mainline Protestants, including Methodists, Lutherans and Episcopalians, largely explains the shift. Over the last seven years, mainline Protestants dropped from just over 17 percent to 12.9 percent of the population.
The report from The Program on Public Values at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., surveyed 54,461 adults in English or Spanish from February through November of last year. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.5 percentage points. The findings are part of a series of studies on American religion by the program that will later look more closely at reasons behind the trends.
The current survey, being released Monday, found traditional organized religion playing less of a role in many lives. Thirty percent of married couples did not have a religious wedding ceremony and 27 percent of respondents said they did not want a religious funeral.
About 12 percent of Americans believe in a higher power but not the personal God at the core of monotheistic faiths. And, since 1990, a slightly greater share of respondents — 1.2 percent — said they were part of new religious movements, including Scientology, Wicca and Santeria.
The study also found signs of a growing influence of churches that either don't belong to a denomination or play down their membership in a religious group.
Respondents who called themselves "non-denominational Christian" grew from 0.1 percent in 1990 to 3.5 percent last year. Congregations that most often use the term are megachurches considered "seeker sensitive." They use rock style music and less structured prayer to attract people who don't usually attend church. Researchers also found a small increase in those who prefer being called evangelical or born-again, rather than claim membership in a denomination.
Evangelical or born-again Americans make up 34 percent of all American adults and 45 percent of all Christians and Catholics, the study found. Researchers found that 18 percent of Catholics consider themselves born-again or evangelical, and nearly 39 percent of mainline Protestants prefer those labels. Many mainline Protestant groups are riven by conflict over how they should interpret what the Bible says about gay relationships, salvation and other issues.
The percentage of Pentecostals remained mostly steady since 1990 at 3.5 percent, a surprising finding considering the dramatic spread of the tradition worldwide. Pentecostals are known for a spirited form of Christianity that includes speaking in tongues and a belief in modern-day miracles.
Mormon numbers also held steady over the period at 1.4 percent of the population, while the number of Jews who described themselves as religiously observant continued to drop, from 1.8 percent in 1990 to 1.2 percent, or 2.7 million people, last year. Researchers plan a broader survey on people who consider themselves culturally Jewish but aren't religious.
The study found that the percentage of Americans who identified themselves as Muslim grew to 0.6 percent of the population, while growth in Eastern religions such as Buddhism slightly slowed.

Vision - Disney Style

On our recent trip to Orlando Cyndi and I had the chance to enjoy a few days at Disney World. Besides the fun of going to Disney, I really get inspired by Walt Disney's dream and vision. Here was a man that bought miles and miles of swamp land! He bought it because he believed that it could be transformed in to an amazing place, "where dreams come true."
What dreams can come true in a swamp?
Yet Walt, believed in the unseen potential of the swamp land and the men and women that would actually roll up their sleeves and bring the dream to life. I find it inspiring that where Walt was the dreamer, visionary, he intentionally placed other gifted, men and women around him to see that the vision was fleshed out properly. His brother was the financial wizard. Walt would dream big dreams, share them with his brother (Roy) and Roy would then have to figure out how to pay for the dream and see that it brought in a profit.
But what inspires me even more is that all these years, the basic vision and dream that Walt laid out is still very much alive and has not been messed with too much. Sure there have been those that have come into the Disney family, tried to change it to their vision, only to see it hurt the overall vision. Eventually the person is asked to leave (removed) and the Disney organization returns back to the foundational principles as laid out by Walt.

Oh that the church of Jesus Christ had such men of faith and vision today.
Visionaries that believe in the unseen Kingdom of God so much, that nothing would stop them from seeing it become a reality. That is in seeing the Great Commission fulfilled.
Oh that the church used the gifts and talents of people to the best of their ability so that the dream could be lived out. Let's let the visionaries hear and sense what God would have us do, share the vision with the right people and have it march forward. If Walt can have a vision of transforming swamp land into a world famous adventure land, can't we embrace the vision to go and partner with the Holy Spirit to see lives transformed and have people live as God designed to live.

I dream such dreams.
I believe in transformation.
I believe in investing all that I have, and in challenging others to help bring the dream to life.

Acts 2:17 says......
‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

I challenge you to dream with me, help build a place where the lame, the sick, the blind, find freedom and are transformed by God. I challenge you to help build an environment where going, being on mission with is the norm.

American Idol... Drama

This season I have tried to sit and watch more of the American Idol, simply because the rest of the family likes it.
I have to admit, I don't really get the big buzz on this show.
Thousands of people try and show that thy can sing and be the next "big star" in the music industry.
People will do anything, behave anyway to been noticed and get the audition!
This year there was "Bikini girl" and "Norman" that pushed the envelope and the "geek factor" as it its know.
Why?
Why do so many people want to have Randy, Simon, Paula and the new gal judge them?
Why do are so many people willing to have Simon, verbally abuse them in public?
Plus, each week if there isn't enough drama with the singers, the four judges have to go after each other and create drama for the network ratings. It's all so fake and so unneeded.

I have enough drama in my life, I don't need to sit and experience more drama... especially forced, created drama.

I guess, I find it sad, that so many people are willing to do anything, for anyone in order to be told that they are "someone"... aka STAR. I find it much more real, valuable and satisfying when my family and friends tell me truly how they see me.
Oh that can cause drama to, but it's real drama... not a network rating thing.

I wonder, how much the idol type of mind set is effecting our kids, work place and families.
The scriptures say that you should have no other idols before God... and that includes making yourself an idol.

Someone do Something

I recently got back from a conference that included about 200 church planters, spouses, and key leaders with in our nation-wide network of churches known as CONVERGE USA. Our network is one of the two fastest growing and most stable church planting movements in the entire nation. There is must to celebrate and yet so much more that needs to be done.
One speaker at the conference shared a sobering stat.

"At least 3,700 churches will close their doors this year...in 2009."

With population growth, the influx in internationals coming to our country... we can not plant enough churches to effectively serve, minister and reach people for Christ at the rate of churches closing. We are loosing the battle in a country that is seen a "Christian". Wow... that is a real sobering thought.

The speaker spoke with passion and urgency that "someone here, in this room has got to do something."
The scriptures tell us that the "fields are ripe but the labors (workers, servants, risk-takers) are few".
I can't stomach that.
God's word said the world is ready, that light should be expanding and yet not enough people are jumping up make a make in eternity. Someone has got to do something.
I believe that that not just or two have to do something, but an entire faith community must rise up and do something.
A bold movement God, the Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ needs to rise up and push back the darkness.
Instead of 3,700 churches closing this year.... 3,700 need to launched,relaunched, reignited.

As we begin this new series called "ALL IN" at Journey. I pray that an entire community of faith explodes with new passion, new sacrifice, new visions and dreams from the Holy Spirit. I pray that this community is the faith community, family called Journey. "SOMEONE HAS GOT TO SOMETHING."

Are ready to do something... then step forward. Don't waste another day. Another day, could see another church close and the darkness will over shadow the light.

Coming Home

I really have enjoyed this week. Several days meeting with some of best church planters and their spouses in our Converge movement of churches, plus some quality time with Cyndi. But a good as this time has been, I'm ready to come home.
When ever I travel over a period of time, I get reminded in my soul what I am called to do and where I am called to serve.

Breaks are good, but don't keep me on the sidelines and on the bench too long.
I could go crazy, without being in the service of God and His people.

From the 75 degrees back to the 17 degrees on Tuesday.
Get ready, Minnesota,..... I'm coming back.

Valentines at Disney

Today is Valentines day we concludeed a two - half day church planters conference in Orlando.
Converge USA our network of churches hosted the event and provided some GREAT deals to get over 200 pastors / planters and spouses at Disney. (suffering for God was tough this week).

After the confefrence Cyndi and I enjoyed at day at Epcot (thanks Tony). We had a fun time and enjoyed watching the fireworks at the Epcot lake. Can't see that enough.

We're celebrating Valentines and our 20 year wedding anniversary a bit early since we're here. (Really a huge God story!!!!)

I hope that you are enjoying a day with the one you love the most.

Simple or complicated?

I have to admit... I'm a pretty simple guy.
Pizza, Peanut Butter and Jelly (grape jelly), nachos, and cheetos make me happy.
Movies that have lots of explosions and car chases I get.
God's grace and love I get and yet we often make it so hard to accept and live within.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not a hard thing. God loved us, so much that he sent is son to live perfect, die a sinners death, rise victorious over the grave and give us freedom and life. Simply!
So why is it that so many people are confused by matters of faith? Could it be another simple thing... that we, the church, have made it more complicated than it was ever intended to be? Have we add layers and layers of programs, process, systems and vocabulary that it appears to be so complicated to the average person and spiritual seeker?
I would say, "yes" we have!

Just this week I heard from several people, "there's got to be more to his faith stuff, this can't just be it."
Part of Jesus mission was to simply live a godly life, simply love people and simplify our relationship with God.
Jesus came to simplify the countless rules, regulations, and boundaries imposed by centuries of religion.
The people of his day were drawn to his simple teaches and truth.
The religious leaders.... hated him for it! They like complicated.

Simple does not me dumb.
Simple does not mean it's not hard or no growth happens.
Rather, Jesus showed simple to be hard, intense, dangerous, radical, and powerful.
Simple brought understanding, understudying brought faith, faith brought action that appeared simple but rocked the world.

Maybe you're confused as you attend Journey, go to LIFE Groups, participate in various ways.
Maybe you're waiting for the simple to end and the complicated to start... because that's how it's always been in church.
I promise you, if you're looking and waiting for the complicated.... you won't find it here at Journey.
Rather you'll find the simple
So why not embrace the simple.... like Jesus taught, modeled and lived.
Simply show love to others.
Simply reach out to a hurting world.
Simply serve expecting nothing in return.
Simply give the best that you have.

Have you had enough of the complicated life?
Simply accept the simple gift of God.... accept and follow a simply power man... God's son Jesus.
Is that simply enough for you?

Inspiring week

This week I have been deeply inspired by the personal movement within people lives all around me. I have had more people coming and going through the office, having lunches, and dialoging via e-mail with than I have in a while. It's not just the volume of the talks, it's the depth and openness of them. There is a passion burning right now to go deeper and higher with God.
There is a desire to be vulnerable, hear the truth and press forward.

This last week we explored the "elephant in the church of the supernatural". How God supernaturally has gifted each of us, as believers to build up, equip and grow the church and it's people. People are exploring this elephant, and beginning to see new insights as to who they are in Christ and who they can become... if they engage these God-given gifts. It has inspired me to review my gift mix and make sure I am being all that I can be with the Holy Spirt and for Jesus.

I want to see the supernatural happen through God's people.
I believe that it does and is happening daily.
I want to make sure that use my gifts, not waste them, and see others grow and grow.

This week has been a domino effect type of week for me. If you're not seeing it, maybe it's because you haven't actively engaged in the supernatural with God, because you're not using your gifts that he has given you. If you have one of the handwritten test, take it and stop by my office.... it may radically effect your life and faith.

New President

Today I watched history unfold. We say that we live in unique times, but today we have really watched and experienced global moment in time. As Obama was sworn in and began his address the nation and world, he pointed the finger at all of us. All of us that have failed each other, failed our country, failed our hopes and dreams. Rather than point finger at one group or the other, he pointed it to all of us.
Obama also make a strong reference to 1 Corinthians and the call to "grow up" and put away, "childish things". What a great attitude for us to hear. Our nation needs to take responsibility and actively take steps to change and make our nation healthy again.

I know many are have various opinions on our new president. But as Christians we are commanded to respect those in authority and pray for them. So as President Obama calls us to grow, let do so and show our support for him, our nation and God.
May this moment in time, not be wasted, but may it really bring us new hope.

SuperBowl 43

OK the teams are set. In two weeks the Steelers will meet the Cardinals for the Championship (and trip to Disney).

Growing up as a Packer fan (still am), my younger brother was also a big Steeler fan. So our family, often cheered extra hard for the Steelers in the AFC. That was back in the amazing days of the "steel curtain". Guys like Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swan, Franco Harris, "Mean" Joe Greene. Yeah that was classic football stuff.

The Cardinals have moved three times in the NFL history and never really been a big hit. Chicago... years and years ago. The St. Louis (Where they still should be and have the biggest fan base), then now Arizona. The last two years the cards have put together an impressive team. Their team attitude is very solid and they have number one class act QB - Kurt Warner. (almost as old as Brett Farve).

Where I may have the family history with the Steelers, I am going with ARIZONA CARDINALS.
The difference to me is that the Cards defense has really stepped as the playoff have gone on. They have not leveled off or repeated what they did all season. They are actually getting better every week. Rare in any time.

I predict a pretty high scoring game. Both QB's have weapons, and read defenses very well.

So I hope to see you at a superbowl party (somewhere) Feb. 1st. Enjoy the food, the fun and celebrate the new champs of the NFL... the ARIZONA CARDINALS.

Record Cold

It's one thing to be cold, it's another to be COLD!
This winter has reminded me so much of my first winter in MN. I was 17 yrs. old and in High School.
I had to walk to school (10 blocks). Mid-way through a week of a arctic blast like we are experiencing now my mom meet after school, near tears. She apologized for having made my younger brother and I walk to school all week. She had not really believed us it was "that cold" and "that dangerous". As we drank our warm coco, she promised to drive us to school the next few days.

This type of cold is nuts. Yet, it's amazing how people adjust, bundle up and for the most part make the best of it.
Today, my kids simply wanted to stay inside, watch TV, play games and relax with extra blankets on.
No complaining... just kids wanting to "chill out".

We are more adaptable than we think we are. We can adjust, when we have to. But wouldn't it be better if we adjusted because we wanted to. Won't be great if changing and adapting was just a natural, normal part of life, instead of fighting it.
Why does it take the extreme to have this happen?

By Sunday it's supposed to 27 above and we'll believe it's a heat wave, or believe it's still to cold.

For now, adapt, and enjoy the sunny sky, cool temps, and warm coco.

Disruptions

Normally I don't mind being interrupted and asked to stop, listen or help someone else.
Interruptions are a part of everyday life.
What bugs me sometimes is disruptions.
Disruptions as in, I'm in the zone.... learning, studying, reading and then bang... someone or something calls or walks in the room and the train of thought derails... crash. It's so hard to go back, get that vibe or flow down.
I find it very hard when a disruption breaks a special moment with God.
I may be a place where I am hearing/ sensing more clearly from God than I have in a long, long time. I want to stay in that conversation, I want to stay in that place. But the disruption pulls me out of it.
Is it Ok for me to not stop sometimes?
Is it OK for me to ignore those other pulls and stay in that "place" with God.

I love surprises. I love being "on call" and seeing what may happen next.
What I am learning is... is that maybe I need to not always jump.... maybe I need to pause and stay a little longer with God.
The interruptions and disruption will always come... but that moment with God may not.

Sunday off - no Church

What a strange feeling it was this past Sunday (Dec. 28th) to wake up at 9:00 a.m. and not already be at the Chateau Theaters having the band rock'in out and preparing to step forward and speak. Earlier this year our leadership team decided to "shut the church down" for one weekend. We wanted to go big before Christmas and then give everyone a break from the routine of Sunday mornings and let everyone relax with family.

It was strange not to be together with our church family.
It was good to just relax with my biological family.

What do you do with yourself on Sunday morning when you're so used to serving and leading at a church (not just Journey but other churches)? It's such a strange feeling. I times I felt really lost on Sunday... I really desired to be at a place of worship, with my friends. I sensed that I was missing out on something that day. I still connected with God personally throughout the day, but the family gathering, the love, the laughter, the tears of a tough week was missing.

I wondered.... "does anyone else miss gathering together to worship this morning as much as I do?"

I wonder now.... "will it inspire us, refresh our passion to serve, invest and gather together for God's glory?"
Or will it simply be a day off, a pointless day off?

It was worth taking off, it was good for me, my family, our leadership team. It was good to go big and then relax and simply be still with our thoughts and God. I just don't want to do it too often. It's hard on a driven person.

Post Christmas DIinner

WOW!
I can not go to bed until I express my thanks to God for empowering such an amazing group of people (Journey Family) that started early, stayed late, cook, baked, cleaned and served at our first FREE Christmas dinner. No ever hesitated as the storm rolled and the temps dropped and dropped. The commitment and passion to reach out to others in the name of Jesus was too strong.
Then the entire day went off without a hitch.
Sunday morning attendance was strong in-spite of the weather.
Then the Dinner drew between 150 -200 people over the course of the five hours.
Laughter, music, conversations and no blown circuits :)

At this time of year it's easy to coast. just go through the motions. I am so blessed to serve along side a church family that desires to advance not coast. To each of you I give my deepest thanks and sincerely pray that God bless you, surprise you as you did soooooooo many others and me today.

To my wife Cyndi, and my three daughters (Abbi, Sarah & Hannah) thank you for sharing me with others, and for you giving so much of yourselves as well. You four set the pace so often and endure so much as we move with God and risk.
May you all celebrate with me the joy of seeing the risk be worth it all.

What follows, I don't know yet. New doors for Journey are already opening for the summer. I do know, that this will only fuel the passion that is already within us to really reach our city for Jesus.

Merry Christmas... or Savior has come.... and dwells among us... he dwells in you my Journey family.

Misfit toys

During our series on a Christmas Family I referenced the classic movie, "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" and the island of misfit toys. A place where all the mixup up, dysfunctional toys go. The King of the island seeks these toys out, gives them a new home, with other misfit toys. They are all wanting to be needed, loved, valued and a part of a real family.

It's that what we all want, and yet we find it so hard to admit that we're all "misfits".
We're dysfunctional in someway.

The church has long been said to be a place where "anyone can come." "Come as you are with hurts, pains, and dysfunction." Yet the church often communicates shock, awe and rejection when the misfits really show up.
Shame on the church.

The King of Kings (Jesus/ God's son) came to live among us and bring us into his family. He came to us in our dysfunction... "come as you are." It's not God that is pushing people away...it's the church, us. It's those that find it hard to admit or remember that they were once a misfit toy as well.

I pray that this Christmas, we return to that simple truth, revealed by God.
"Come as you are."
Transformation will happen as you live in this amazing family and develop a real relationship with God.
But it will happen over time.
So I put a challenge out to myself, my friends, my church and the church at large.

Open wide your doors, let all the misfits and dysfunctional people come and find faith, love and hope this year.
My your home and churches be an island of refuge for the misfits of the world, not those who think that they have it all together.
I'm a misfit. I admit it. Welcome to the island of misfit toys called Journey church.
